South Carolina from A to Z

“H” is for Hamrick, Wiley Cicero (1860-1931). Industrialist, businessman, politician.

“G” is for Georgetown County (815 square miles; 2020 population 63,404). Named in honor of King George III, Georgetown County lies in the fertile plain surrounding Winyah Bay.

“F” is for Flat Nose. Flat Nose, a bulldog owned by Barney Odom of the small community of Doversville in Darlington County, became a national sensation in the late 1980s—known for his ability to climb pine trees.

“E” is for Eight Box Law [1882]. The Eight Box Law of 1882 was an election law designed to ensure white supremacy in South Carolina without violating the Fifteenth Amendment—which barred states from depriving their citizens of the vote on the basis of race.

“E” is for Eikerenkoetter, Frederick Joseph II (1935-2009). Clergyman, educator.

“D” is for DeBow James Dunwoody Brownson (1820-1867). Editor.

“C” is for Capers, Ellison (1837-1908). Educator, soldier, minister.

Barnwell District, now Barnwell County, was created in 1798 from the area formerly known as Winton County.

“A” is for Allen Brothers Milling Company. Allen Brothers Milling Company is one of Columbia’s most celebrated landmarks.

"Q" is for Quakers. The Society of Friends [more commonly known as Quakers] has had a fragmented history in South Carolina.

"P" is for Pacific Mills. Pacific Mills began in Lawrence, Massachusetts in 1850. In 1915, in order to expand its operations it purchased four mills on the outskirts of Columbia.

“O” is for Ocean Forest Hotel. In 1930, one of the state's most elegant hotels opened its doors at Myrtle Beach. The Ocean Forest, with its ten story wedding-cake tower and five story wings was a sight to behold.

“N” is for Nairne, Thomas (d. 1715). Indian agent. A native of Scotland, Nairne was in South Carolina by 1695.

“M” is for Mabry, George Lawrence, Jr. (1917-1990). Soldier, Medal of Honor Recipient.

“E” is for Elliott, Stephen (1771-1830). Legislator, banker, botanist.

“D” is for Dennis, Rembert Coney (1915-1992). Attorney, legislator.

"C” is for Carolina I-house. The I-house is an architectural term first coined in the 1930s to describe the house type identified in the “I” states of Indiana, Illinois, ad Iowa.

“B” is for Batesburg-Leesville. Batesburg-Leesville (Lexington County; 2020 population 5,251).

“A” is for Anderson (Anderson County; 2020 population 29,170).

“T” is for Tindall, George Benjamin (1921-2006). Historian, educator.

"S” is for Salvador, Francis (ca. 1747-1776). Legislator, patriot.

“R” is for Rice trunks. Rice trunks are wooden sluices installed in “banks” or dikes of rice fields for irrigation and flood control.
