SBCC
South Bend City Church
South Bend City Church began in 2016 when our lead pastor, Jason Miller, discerned a calling to launch a new Jesus community where doubt and faith could coexist, where people could wrestle with the challenges of an ancient faith in a modern world, and where everyone could belong.

Jason Miller - When Jesus tells us not to worry, is this just a command that adds shame to our struggles with anxiety? Or does he give us wisdom for how we can become more aware of the care and competency of God? Song: Jireh by Maverick City Music If you're a part of the growing digital SBCC community, we'd love to hear from you! Drop us a note letting us know how you found us and what keeps you l...

1.23 [TEACHING] The Sermon on the Mount (wk 11) - Matthew 6:9-13 24.01.2022 31:12
Jason Miller - At the center of the sermon on the mount, we find the prayer Jesus taught his disciples to pray. How do we approach prayer as something other than a lever to pull to make things happen, or a duty to perform to earn divine approval? If you're a part of the growing digital SBCC community, we'd love to hear from you! Drop us a note letting us know how you found us and what keeps you li...

Jason Miller - Jesus continues his warnings against public displays of religiosity when he talks about prayer and fasting. 1.9 [REFLECTION] You Are Not Alone Liturgy - Isaiah 43:1-7 13.01.2022 13:24
In our gatherings this weekend, we took time before jumping back into the Sermon on the Mount to reflect on and respond to the last few weeks. Sometimes we can feel alone in whatever we're going through, whether it's the deep pain of life not being what we thought it would be or experiencing a season of great joy in the midst of everyone else's chaos. We hope that this liturgy serves as a reminder...
1.9 [TEACHING] The Sermon on the Mount (wk 9) - Matthew 6:1-4 10.01.2022 33:54
Jason Miller - Jesus tells us to give in secret, without "trumpeting" the gift or letting one hand know what the other is doing. Why does giving in secret matter? And what do we do with the apparent contradiction between this teaching and his instruction in chapter 5 to let people see our good deeds? If you're a part of the growing digital SBCC community, we'd love to hear from you! Drop us a note...
12.19 [TEACHING] Advent (wk 4) - Hope and Being Human 21.12.2021 29:56
Jason Miller - When things are hard, like they are right now, we find all kinds of ways to try to escape. Some of those paths are more destructive than others, but they all take us further away from hope. If you're a part of the growing digital SBCC community, we'd love to hear from you! Jason Miller and Daniel Bannoura - If Advent is a time to explore the meaning of hope in the face of dark realities, we should talk about injustice. Daniel Bannoura is a Palestinian Christian and a member of our SBCC family who shared with us about the experience of violence and injustice in his homeland and the ways he seeks hope. Books Referenced: The Other Side of the Wall by Munther Isaac If...
12.5 [CONVERSATION] Advent (wk 2) - Christian Hope and Climate Change 06.12.2021 55:36
Jason Miller and Jim Stump - If Advent is a time to explore the meaning of hope in the face of dark realities, we should talk about one of the most difficult things we're facing in this era: climate change. Jim Stump is the Vice President of Programs at Biologos, an organization that explores the intersection between science and Christian faith. He joined us for a conversation about science and fa...

Jason Miller- When Jesus speaks to people in abusive situations and tells them to turn the other cheek, is he prescribing passive acceptance? Or is he teaching something more subversive? 10.24 [VISION] A different kind of conversation about church and giving 27.10.2021 1:05:30
Jason Miller - We're taking a break from our series on the Sermon on the Mount to have a candid conversation about church and giving. This is a teaching probably unlike ones you've heard before about church and money, and it includes a bit of a mythbuster on tithing and the local church. It includes reference at the end to a work of art called "Tethered Sky" by Robert and Shana Parkeharrison. If y...
10.17 [VISION] SBCC‘s future home, part 2 19.10.2021 10:34
Jason Miller - In September, we began a process of communal discernment and feedback as we prepare for the end of our current lease at Studebaker 112 and consider some new possibilities for where we'll call home. Our lead pastor, Jason, took some time in this week's gatherings to report back to the community the feedback we've heard, and to let you know where things stand.

10.10 [TEACHING] The Sermon on the Mount (wk 4) - Matthew 5:17-24 11.10.2021 36:36
Jason Miller - As Jesus begins to give us pictures of the life of God in the sermon on the mount, he takes the prohibition against murder and stretches it to include a condemnation of anger. Why does he do that? Is this just a heavy burden, or a new possibility?
10.3 [TEACHING] The Sermon on the Mount (wk 3) - Matthew 5:13-16 04.10.2021 38:58
Jason Miller - Right after telling people that the kingdom of God is theirs, regardless of any aspect of their circumstance, Jesus speaks of being salt and light. What could these images mean for us, and what purpose do they serve?
9.26 [VISION] SBCC and the Future Possibilities of Where We Call Home 30.09.2021 45:50
Jason Miller - This week we opened up an important conversation about the place SBCC calls home. We moved into Studebaker 112 in 2017 as renters, and while we have loved our home and flourished here, we've also begun evaluating the wisdom of renting versus owning. In this episode, you'll hear us talk about those questions and share a possibility that we've been exploring that would allow us to own...

8.29 [TEACHING] Mantras: Fields, Not Factories 31.08.2021 43:07
Jason Miller - We often use the things we can see to describe the things we can't see, but what happens when our imagination for the spiritual life is shaped by the factory instead of the field?
