If every year for the rest of your life played out the way 2020 did, would your life be worth living? Another way of asking that is where is your hope? Peter writes some incredibly encouraging words in 1 Peter that have a lot to say about where we can find our hope.

In 1 Corinthians 13 Paul says, “Love is kind….” The word “kind” can be translated as “useful or beneficial to someone else” or even “love expressed in action.” Not only does this observation change how we parent, but it must also change the goal of our parenting. The goal of a parent who is a follower of Jesus must be to raise children who are beneficial to others in all of their relationships.

If we look at the families in the Bible, most of them are pretty screwed up. The Bible talks about its families this way because all families can be dysfunctional. The good news is that Jesus always meets us in what is real and then points us to what is ideal.

Jesus didn’t ask His followers to love like they would want to be loved. He asked them to love “as He had loved them.” This kind of love raises the bar. It means that love must lay down its life for the sake of others. It means that love gives and sacrifices because that is the kind of love that Jesus brings.

Our vision is to be a disciple-making church that brings hope and healing to our community. This week we look at Jesus healing a man that has been paralyzed for 38 years. But he goes further than healing him, he challenges him to holiness. Jesus is after far more than physical healing, He wants spiritual healing as well.

When we magnify Jesus, we are doing the very thing that we were created for. We are each meant to become less so that Jesus can become more, and there is great joy in doing so. What if our problem isn’t that we desire too much, but that we actually desire too little?
