Lamentations leads the community into a rhythm of grief and healing for the fall of Jerusalem. It challenges us to enlarge our hearts to bear the burden of pain in the body of Christ.

The Jews had a tradition of reading the book of Ruth during the feast of Pentecost. We celebrated Pentecost with a reading of Ruth, the story of how an outsider became an insider in God's story. Pentecost is a call for us to bring outsiders inside the gospel.

The Song reaches its climax, declaring such intimate, holy, divine love as the very flame of God. But while fire can warm and purify, it can also burn and destroy.

We take our salvation for granted. The King knocks on our door and we find His timing inconvenient. But our repentance leads us deeper into the Garden.

The King marries the Bride. And in their consumption, she becomes by grace what He is by nature.

The soul has an unlimited capacity to progress in union with the eternal nature of God. But such growth comes in seasons. The soul oscillates between springtime and nighttime.

A sense of unworthiness can alienate us from unconditional love. In this passage the King brings the insecure Bride to Himself by infecting her with His love.

The Song of Songs is meant to be read as an invitation into the holy of holies: perfect union and communion with God.

This dramatization tells the true but uncertain story of Christ's victory over Death in Hades from the perspective of King David.

Self-esteem is the final step before the soul falls into the abyss of pride.

Despondency is a feeling of being downcast, disheartened, and hopeless. It leads to spiritual death. But hope in Christ overcomes it.

Apathy (sloth) moves too slow and too fast. It welcomes distraction. But the real devastation is that it permits the devil to plunder our riches in Christ.

Anger is an impatience aroused by thwarted desire. Which means it isn't only an outburst, but also an inner resentment and agitation. Anger within the church gives place to the devil.

Greed blinds us to the spiritual world and binds us to the material world. Only contentment in Christ can cure us of this unnatural passion.

Lust is a disordered and diminished desire for our union with beauty. And this applies to more than sex!

Also known as the Seven Deadly Sins, the passions are thoughts that enter the cracks in our hearts and disfigure us. The first is gluttony. Gluttony is not about how much we eat, but why we eat.
