After using salt as a metaphor for the believer’s influence in the world, Jesus employed a second metaphor. He likened his disciples to light.

After sharing eight beatitudes, Jesus transitioned to talk about the way in which disciples can make a difference in society. To talk about such a subject, he used two metaphors. The first metaphor used salt as an example. The second focused on light.

In Matthew 5:10-12, Jesus taught his disciples how to handle hate from the world. The three verses constituted what could be considered the final beatitude. In total, one finds eight beatitudes in the Sermon on the Mount. The first four deal with one’s relationship to God. The second four deal with one’s relationship to others. Such relationships are at the heart of the Christian life.

In Matthew 5:1-2, Matthew provided an introduction to Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. The sermon takes up three chapters in Matthew’s gospel, running from Matthew 5:1 to Matthew 7:29. The sermon is perhaps the most famous passage of Scripture. No other passage of the Bible has been read, recited, memorized, studied, and written about more than the Sermon on the Mount.
