Seasonal Preaching

Dependability should be a key part of every Christian’s character. It is the quality of being trustworthy and reliable. We need to show that we are dependable in every part of what God calls us to be.

Christians walk by faith, not by sight (cf. 2 Corinthians 5:7). This affects every part of their lives, every single day. However, it is not a natural mindset, but comes through spiritual growth and transformation. We must train ourselves to act on faith, and then we must do it.

In His conversation with Nicodemus, Jesus spoke of the serpent in the wilderness as a type of Him in His crucifixion. The account of the Israelites punishment by fiery serpents, and following salvation by looking upon a bronze serpent is instructive as it pertains to God's plan for salvation. Jesus' teaching in His talk with the Pharisee is filled with important truth.

The evidence for God's fundamental goodness is not only overwhelming in scripture, but in each of our lives. We need to meditate on His goodness, and tell others about it. We also need to realize what it says about Him, and how we should respond.

The significance of hope to the Christian experience is impossible to overemphasize. Everything we say and do touches the topic. While it is a blessed topic to discuss, we must understand the utility of hope. It has a functionary purpose. What is the function of hope?

Jesus famously commissioned His disciples saying,  “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.”  ( Matthew 4:19 ) This very sentence represents a formula for disciples to apply for successful evangelism.

While encouraging effort to preserve unity, Paul reminded the Ephesians of the several factors in Christ which are singular (cf. Ephesians 4:4-6). Among them is the one baptism. What is the one baptism? What makes it distinct from others?

The Dead Sea has a reputation. Its salt content its so high because it takes and takes, but never gives. It has no outlets. A Christian is given much, but in order that he can give back to God and others. Do not be a Dead Sea disciple.

Paul exhorted the Ephesian brethren to guard the unity of the Spirit, as they were one body, and created for unity in Christ Jesus (cf. Ephesians 4:1-6). The unified body of Christ is an immense blessing, and display of God’s power.

There are great challenges of faith faced by young people. These may be unique, but the solution is the same. How shall the young secure their hearts? God revealed the plan through the Psalmist long ago (cf. Psalm 119:9-16).

Ungodliness is progressive. It does not sit idle, but worsens. We must be wary of underestimating the severity of any offense. The Psalmist reveals the progressive nature of ungodliness,  “Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful”  (Psalm 1:1).

God has blessed us with many spiritual blessings. Among them is the blessing of the assembly. It is not merely a duty, but an indispensable need that God has supplied. Why is the assembly so important, and what makes it such a tremendous blessing?

When godly Christians raise their family, their children are bound to ask questions about baptism at some point. Young children often ask, “How do I know when to be baptized?” What does scripture say?

How do we know that we have eternal life? How can we be confident? John explains,  “He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.”  (1 John 5:12) God has provided insurmountable evidence that Jesus is His Son, and such should move us to faith in Him that fully surrenders. If this is true for us, then we can be certain we have eternal life, for we have the Son...

“And it is the Spirit who bears witness, because the Spirit is truth…He who believes in the Son of God has the witness in himself…And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.”  (1 John 5:6, 10, 11) Part of the confidence we have that we are children of God is the witness of the Holy Spirit. The Day of Judgment is a certainty. We will be rewarded for our deeds on earth, whether good or bad. Many Christians sadly await in terror for that day, rather than the joy which children of God should have. What gives us confidence/boldness for that day? John says love. 

Our greatest goal in life should be to reach the eternal glory of heaven promised by God. What are the steps to get to that goal?

We live in a sex-crazed culture. The incessant onslaught of sexually themed media is a great danger to our soul. How do we combat sexual sin? Job said,  “I have made a covenant with my eyes; Why then should I look upon a young woman?”  (Job 31:1)

The Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that Jesus is the first creation of God, and is not God Himself. According to them, He is called “the Son of God” because He is the foremost created Son. How should this error be answered? What does the Bible mean when it refers to Jesus as “the Son of God?”

With so many contradictory doctrines all claiming to be of God, how do we discern between truth and error? John gives the divine blueprint (1 John 3:24-4:6).

Paul expressed his deep concern that the Galatians were being persuaded by Judaizing error (cf. Galatians 4). He demonstrated the irony in such by showing their decision to turn to the Old Law put them right back where they were before Christ. Spiritual power and riches are only in Christ, not in physical things.

John speaks to the confidence we may have when Christ comes again, knowing we are born of God. 1 John 3 details the proof that we are children of God which provides us confidence for when He comes again. Ultimately, we must abide in Him to be identified with Him.

Lamentations is a gloomy book detailing the grief experienced by the Jews in the destruction of Jerusalem and the temple. They had forsaken God, and were punished. However, in the middle of the book there is the positive message of hope. We can learn from the perspective of the writer as he drew strength from God in the hardest of times.

John 2:13-17 records Jesus' cleansing of the temple at the beginning of His ministry. When He had driven the moneychangers and all the animals out of the temple grounds, the disciples remembered a Messianic passage,  "Then His disciples remembered that it was written, 'Zeal for Your house has eaten Me up.'"  (v. 17) Jesus' intense zeal for His Father's will is admirab...
