Jesus called His disciples to look up and see the harvest as the Samaritans came to Him (cf. John 4). He noted, “I sent you to reap that for which you have not labored; others have labored, and you have entered into their labors.” (John 4:38) We, too, must realize we have entered into the labors of others, and in humility and gratitude continue and finish the work.

John the baptizer is an excellent example of what it means to be a servant of Christ and God. He did nothing more or less than what God appointed him to do, and was content in doing so. He humbly receded to the background when Jesus arrived. We, too, must possess the humility of John in the service of Christ, always allowing Him to increase, while we decrease.

God has equipped His people with the power to endure. This comes from the understanding of the difference between what is seen and what is not seen. Paul demonstrated such as he contrasted the “light affliction,” and the “eternal weight of glory” (2 Corinthians 4:16-18). The children of God are blessed with the hope of something that far outweighs the afflictions they are to endure.

During the holiday season there is a lot of talk about keeping the focus on the true meaning of the season. There are churches that make it seem they are emphasizing the spiritual during this time of year. However, their focus on the physical, social matters shows otherwise. “Through wisdom a house is built, And by understanding it is established; By knowledge the rooms are filled With all precious and pleasant riches.” (Proverbs 24:3-4) If we want our homes to flourish we will put God first, and value His wisdom.

Members of the Lord’s body are a peculiar people, and everything we do has great purpose. What is this all about? Do we understand the “why” of what we do, and don’t do? Or are we missing the point?

How we hear God’s word is of great importance. If we are not hearing properly then we will not be able to understand the truth. Jesus’ parable of the sower, and explanation of His teaching in parables in Luke 8 is used to demonstrate this important point.

Christians need to recognize the power to carry out God’s will, and have spiritual success as individuals, and local congregations, resides in GOd’s word. There has not been a time where God used any measure more powerful than His word to accomplish His purposes.

Does God care how He is worshiped? Does the kind of worship we offer Him affect our relationship with Him? What kind of worship is God seeking?

The prophet Isaiah warned of the folly of God’s people trusting in Egypt for protection. In Isaiah 30:1-7, the prophet shows how Egypt will be their shame, and calls her “Rahab-Hem-Shebeth” – Rahab (an epithet of Egypt) sits idle. We need to put our trust in God, not anyone or anything else.
