Thomas is an example of the struggle of faith which Christians may face. He is not without flaw, but his doubt is misunderstood. Thomas wanted to believe, and strove to believe. Jesus gave Him what He needed, and called Him to belief.

“I came to send fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled!”  (Luke 12:49) In what way has the Prince of Peace come to bring fire?

In 1 Corinthians 16, Paul gave the saints the command for giving as we have prospered on the first day of the week. We need to be careful to observe this command, but also to understand it. Paul addressed this topic in further depth in 2 Corinthians 8-9. We need to appreciate the grace of giving.

Paul prayed for the spiritual growth of the Ephesians by asking that God would grant them a  “spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him…that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe”  (Ephesians 1:17-19).

2 Samuel 12 records Nathan confronting David for his series of sins. The text teaches us several things concerning sin, God’s word, personal accountability, and forgiveness.

In discipleship, we must not only have a proper understanding of the principles involved (the right theory), but we must put those into practice. It is not enough to claim to abide in Him, but we must know the method of such, and apply it to our lives (cf. 1 John 2:6).

John the Baptist was held in high regard by Jesus (cf. Matthew 11:11). His ministry was important, and his character was impressive. John 3:22-30 displays the magnificent attitude and character behind the one who prepared the way for the Lord. We should imitate him.

“So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God.”  (James 1:19-20) How we react to, and interact with God’s word is of great importance. James tells us what to do.

“Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”  (Romans 15:13) A life of true fulfillment, joy, peace, and hope is found only in God, His word revealed by the Holy Spirit, and our faithful obedience to it.

Isaiah 53 reveals the prophecy of the vicarious suffering of Christ for the salvation of mankind. Chapter 54 looks forward to the time when God’s people will be restored, and many from all over will take part in the blessings. Isaiah 55 is God’s invitation for all to take part in His promised blessings.

The Lord’s prayer recorded in John 17 holds very powerful and important points for us to consider.

In 1 Kings 20, the Syrians made the mistake of suggesting that the Israelites defeated them because God was only powerful in the hills, and not the plain. When they fought them in the valley, God showed them He is almighty God everywhere. We can learn from this that God deserves our praise and faith at all times – high and low, good and bad, etc.

Jesus told the Pharisees,  “The men of Nineveh will rise up in the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and indeed a greater than Jonah is here.”  (Matthew 12:41) What does it mean that they  “repented at the preaching of Jonah?”  The context shows the powerful demand and meaning of repentance.

In 1 Kings 22, king Ahab sought king Jehoshaphat’s aid in taking Ramoth of Gilead from the Syrian army, and Ben-Hadad. When a true prophet of God was asked whether God willed this effort, it was revealed to both kings that He did not, and it would fail. Regardless, they went to Ramoth Gilead, and Ahab perished. Why do men reject the truth? This account provides some factors to consider.

The Hebrew writer quoted Psalm 40:6-8 to demonstrate God’s will for Jesus to come to earth in a physical body to die for the atonement of all sins (cf. Hebrews 10:5-10). His sacrifice is all-sufficient. Psalm 40 also holds a message for us to apply to ourselves as paralleled with Jesus.
