Many of Solomon’s proverbs are given by a father to his son. Rather than hoping for our children purely to be happy, surely it’s better that they are wise?

The Psalms are divided in to five groups, each one ending in resounding praise of God. Whatever difficulties we face, whatever mess we are in, however broken the world is right now, this is not the end of the story. May it end in praise.

Psalm 3 is a prayer by a man who had got himself in to a mess and was crying out to God for deliverance. Even when we are facing the consequences of our own poor judgement, we can be sure that God is ready to lift up our heads to face the day.

At a time of chaos and uncertainty, we have a responsibility not to sit back, but to pray for our politicians. Psalm 2 is an introduction for how to pray not for ourselves as individuals, but with a broader view; for those in authority to have wisdom in their decision-making.

This is the start of a new series looking at wisdom. What does it look like? How do you get it? How do you practice it? How does it work out in ordinary life? How do we grow in wisdom so that we can live well? God has given us everything we need in order to know him better and apply that knowledge in our everyday lives – his word and his Spirit.

At the end of a year, we have the opportunity to take stock of the past year and look ahead to the next. Who do we need to thank? Who do we need around us to enable us to continue to run the Christian race well?

Christmas reminds us that we seek an ongoing, unconditional love. It’s also the time when we remember that such love has already been given to us, and we can demonstrate this love to others.

In a society looking for happiness in all sorts of ways, how do we experience real joy that lasts through any and every situation we might face?

As Christians we are called to have hope in the faithfulness of God, and to be people who bring hope into the lives of others. That’s the message of advent.
