Jesus encourages those who put their faith in him to follow Paul’s example in lifelong spiritual growth. Surprisingly, the reasons we are given aren’t so much about us and the personal benefits of a growing faith. The reasons we have to grow are all about our God and about those who need him. When presenting our requests to Jesus, we always pray, “Not our will, but your will be done.” Why? It’s simple. We don’t know what’s best for us, but Jesus does. Two additional reading that contain this theme are Isaiah 62:1-5 and Ephesians 3:14-21.

The only reason Mary claims she will be called blessed is because of what the Lord did for her. Humble and lowly though she was, the Lord lifted her to a place of prominence in salvation history. 1 Corinthians 9:7-12, 19-23 – Sometimes exercising our right to love means sacrificing something else that we feel entitled to. But, we happily exercise our right to love for the sake of the gospel and for the sake of our neighbor. In Christ We Live Our Family Callings – Ephesians 5:21-6:4 – While we might have our ideas of what a perfect family might look like, God here tells us what the perfect family looks like. All Things Are Possible with God – Mark 10:17-27 – Left on our own with no help, it is impossible for us to get to heaven. But, with God all things are possible especially forgiveness, and especially peace. Two additional readings that pair well with these verses are 2 Kings 5:14-27 and Hebrews 4:12-13.

The world has fallen into sin, but God continues to give us gifts. Some of the gifts that God gives us after the fall are repentance and forgiveness. Two additional readings that pair well with these verses are Revelation 20:1-6 and Mark 3:20-35.

Jesus prayed, “Father, glorify your name!” The Father has glorified his name in Christ’s death, and he will glorify it again in our lives. Two additional readings that pair well with these verses are Isaiah 43:1-7 and Hebrews 5:7-9.

God doesn’t think of greatness like most people do. He sees greatness not in pride and arrogance, but in humble service. Two additional readings that pair well with these verses are Numbers 12:1-15 and James 3:13-18.
