Obadiah is the definition of a minor prophet. At only one chapter this is a very short prophecy and it is to not to the people of Israel or Judah, but instead to a lesser known nation of Edom. Yet what God has to say to Edom He says to us today. His promise to Judah is our promise today. 

Chapter 9 is all about God's promise of restoration. Throughout the book God's judgment, justice, and grace are in balance. That all comes together in this chapter. 

What does God have to say about our going to church and going through the motions? Read Amos chapter 8 and find out. He calls out His people for crushing the needy and cheating people for profit. As believers we need to approach all aspects of life in God honoring ways and where we err we must repent. 

How do we see God's justice and mercy balanced throughout the book of Amos? We see that balance when we come to chapters like chapter 7 where God is pronouncing judgment and yet mercy in the judgment. God has the right utterly destroy us and yet has grace through the life, death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus. God made a way where there was no way. Follow Him today. 

What does spiritual ease look like? It looks like not worrying about sin or repentance. It means we seek security in things other than God. Israel's pride is what brought about their downfall. Our pride and will bring us as followers of Jesus under the discipline of God. May we fall on our face before a mighty God! 

Amos Chapter 5 serves as a breath of fresh air for us as we come out of the first four chapters. We see that as the first four chapters show God as just and righteousness through His judgment of the nations and Israel. In chapter five we see God's mercy and grace on display. God does indeed call His people to holiness. In these two chapters He lays out His court case as to why He will judge Israel. We must then ask, then what is God telling us today? 

What does it mean that God is a Just God? Is He thus wrathful? We will see throughout this book how God balances His justice and righteousness with His mercy. Amos explores the reality that God does not sit idly by as the world does injustices. There is a limit and a point at which God judges.
