Breakfast of Champions has a staple of my breakbeat and dance menu since I moved to San Francisco in 2005. This year was my first time playing the event. You wouldn't know that this was an 11am set from all the banging music on all the stages and the fully packed dance floors. As always, Breakfast of Champions was another great start to the new year. The Space Cowboys once again brought the best party of the year and I wasn't going to let my knee and crutches hold me back! This mix is about resistance, soul, hope, love, empathy, soul, and funkiness. It's partially a reaction to the deep outrage and anger so many, including myself, have felt and expressed since November. That much outrage, while justifiable, gets heavy fast, so I started looking for tracks that felt optimistic and free. There's some disco, soulful house, and a few excellent South African house tracks...

My biggest DJ thrill of the year hands down goes to Breakfast of Champions. Everybody brought their A game. The party went off and then some.
