Reopening the Wormhole: A Star Trek Deep Space Nine Podcast

Tv EN ↓ 238 episodes

Join Jack, Kevin and Sam as they journey through the wonderful world of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, one randomly selected episode at a time! Each week, they'll go over their notes on each episode, compare them with other iterations of Star Trek, complain about Voyager, talk about whatever the hell else comes to mind, and much, much more! Of course it wouldn't be Reopening the Wormhole without the requisite visit to Quark's to spin the Dabo wheel and determine next week's episode. So crack open a bottle of Kanar and let the good times roll as we reopen the wormhole, week after week!

Plus: find out why O'Brien is an asshole, who Vulcan Darts...

Along the way,...

150 - Statistical Probabilities (6x09) 17.01.2019

For our 150th episode blowout… the boys are bringing you just another classic bog standard RTW outing!  That means promises unfulfilled, nonsensical tangents, drunken disorderliness, and hot takes on the kind of topics Trek fans WANT TO HEAR ABOUT, like the Scarlet Letter, the enduring popularity of C-3PO, Fungi Babble, and what Jerry Seinfeld's take on warp zones would be.  On the other hand, we'...

149 - Blaze of Glory (5x23) (with Geoff Clarke, Jason Majeski, and Barm) 09.01.2019

O Canada…. Our home and native land! Come one and all, and witness the epic war to decide which country is superior: Canada or the US! The crew is joined by Canadians Barm, Geoff Clarke, and Jason Majeski in this wild, raucous episode that marks the end of the Maquis, the end of Eddington, and the origin of the "Eddington Clause" on RTW. But be forewarned: the spirit of the Canucks is alive and we...

148 - Doctor Bashir, I Presume (5x16) 02.01.2019

If you presume to discover why Julian Bashir is so good at everything… you presume correctly by listening to this episode. The RTW crew has a great discussion about Brian George, Seinfeld   guest star/Papa Bashir, the ethics of genetic engineering, and whether it's okay to retrofit significant character traits five seasons into a television show. And what, exactly, separates this twist from the ma...

[BONUS] Black Mirror: USS Callister (4x01) (with Lauren Petronaci) 25.12.2018

It's a Christmas Miracle!  For the second year in a row Lauren joins the crew to talk about…. Space Fleet!?  That's right, to kick off the Winter of Star Trek and our Discontent, RTW is talking about something that's not Star Trek.  It's the season four opener of Black Mirror, which… if you're a Star Trek fan, just watch it, OK?  Along the way, we'll be chatting about toxic fandom, internet trolls...

Turn down the gravity, put on some of your favorite Vulcan etudes, and grab a big bowl of racht, because it's time for MELORA!!!! First-time guest Joel Bernhard joins us to discuss the charms of the Klingon restaurant, the evolutionary improbability of Fallit Kot, and hortas. The racht may be half-dead, but the RTW crew is at least 70% alive in this riveting discussion. Don't float on! Listen now!

[BONUS] Second Breakfast: Once More Unto the Brunch 12.12.2018

The fans have spoken! And what they've asked for is LESS STAR TREK and MORE BREAKFAST! So we have heeded your call, bringing you another two hours of breakfast talk. We'll be reading lots of listener emails, discussing topics we missed on our previous breakfast episode, such as donuts, omelets, and breakfast drinks, and along the way, we'll have some mimosas, hear some songs, and have an all aroun...

146 - Once More Unto the Breach (7x07) 30.11.2018

We all know Dahar Master Kor is bomb, but what the boys forgot is just how bomb his final appearance in Trek was!  When they're not talking about the voice actors of the Animated Series, the Star Wolf team, what Saiyans and Klingons have in common, Henry V, the wonders of Galens or going on a beer run mid-episode, they're trying to figure out who they love more, Worf, Martok, or Kor (or is it Davy...

145 - Distant Voices (3x18) (with Alexander Smith) 15.11.2018

Strap yourselves in and get ready for a ride as we invite faithful listener Alexander Smith to join us for the Bashirtastic season 3 episode, Distant Voices! We've got a lot of ground to cover, as we dig deep into the Emmy-winning make-up effects of rapidly aging Bashir, the origins of this very podcast's intro, a stunningly strong one-time villain, Julian's RTW redemption (courtesy of Alex), Kevi...

144 - The Search, Part 1 (3x01) (with Barm) 31.10.2018

Ooooh it's time for a game changer! In an episode that is often credited with launching the main DS9 story line into action, this episode features the introduction of a new ship, a new Canadian friend, and a whole host of other firsts! Our old Canadian friend, Barm, busts his way in to discuss Sisko bullying Quark, the sexiness (or creepiness?) of Michael Eddington, possibilities of upcoming Trek...

[BONUS] - Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home 25.10.2018

It's the exciting conclusion to the Summer of Star Trek, all the way in late October!   This time the gang finds themselves so wrapped in joy by Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (the one with the whales), that they can't help but shoot this gigantic whale of a podcast right out of their quivering blowholes.  It's bound to make quite a splash!  While the boys explain (in whale song) what makes this fi...

143 - Far Beyond the Stars (6x13) 17.10.2018

We finally made it! We're sitting down to chat about what is often cited as the single best episode of Deep Space Nine and we promise that we've delivered no less than the BEST episode of Reopening the Wormhole to match it! After all, what could be better than listening to three white men trying to examine racism and the African-American experience in 1950's New York??? For real though, this episo...

142 - Profit and Lace (6x23) (Featuring Josh Lee and Kregg Castillo) 04.10.2018

No show is perfect - even one as great as Deep Space Nine. And today, the guys are covering an episode that has been voted by fans as the worst episode of the show! And besides being one of the least funny Ferengi episodes, this episode is problematic when viewed through a modern lens in several other ways. And who better to discuss the unfortunate ways this episode treats cis and trans women than...

[BONUS] Star Trek: Insurrection (Audio Commentary) (with Josh Lee) 29.09.2018

It's now officially fall, but the Summer of Star Trek continues here on Reopening the Wormhole!  After the runaway success of our audio commentary for Nemesis last year, the gang is definitely feeling some aggressive tendencies and has decided to revisit the format for the OTHER mediocre TNG movie that they don't feel like putting the work of making an actual episode in to, 1998's Star Trek: Insur...

141 - Little Green Men (4x08) (with Kregg Castillo) 26.09.2018

After the second episode of Deep Space Wine 3 got way out of hand, the guys are back the next day, wiped out and regretting their decisions, but still rarin' and ready to talk about what many consider to be one of the best episodes in the DS9 canon. While Quark, Nog, and Rom are experiencing a wacky fish-out-of-water scenario, Kregg joins the guys to talk about the likelihood of professional sport...

140 - The Jem'Hadar (2x26) (with Kregg Castillo, Mike Greenan and Kashmir Loveless) 19.09.2018

Mike Greenan and Kashmir Loveless are along for the ride again, and this time we're also joined by our Ferengi expert and Dabo Boy, Kregg, to figure out just what it is about the Ferengi people that seems to drive Federation Hew-mons so crazy. We're also trying to determ...

139 - Chrysalis (7x05) (with Mike Greenan and Kashmir Loveless) 15.09.2018

To kick off the third, and possibly final Deep Space Wine session, the RTW crew is joined by two very special guests!  The ebullient Mike Greenan, childhood friend of Sam/former boss of Kevin/former bullying victim of Jack and his gal pal, the warm and witty wine expert Kashmir Loveless!  We're cracking open several bottles of wine that have increasingly less to do with Star Trek as we settle in t...

[BONUS] Star Trek III: The Search for Spock 07.09.2018

Great Scott! This week, we're travelling back in time to the year of 1984 for our in-depth examination of Star Trek III: The Search for Spock! Just what do we make of this very strange, very unique chapter of the Trek universe? Well, we'll have plenty to say, whether it's on the subject of Christopher Lloyd's magnificent turn as Kruge, the utter nonsense of Vulcan legends and mysticism, the search...

138 - Strange Bedfellows (7x19) (Featuring Sean Davis) 29.08.2018

Breeeoweeeeerrrreeeeowww! In case you couldn't tell, that was the sound of the Breen celebrating their entry into the Dominion. The RTW breaks back into the final nine-episode arc that ends DS9, joined by first-time guest and San Diego Comic-Con attendee, Sean Davis, of YumChunks! They couldn't be more excited to talk about the aforementioned Breen, major turning points for both Damar and Kai Winn...

[BONUS] (Star Trek: Voyager) Threshold (2x15) 22.08.2018

The years of waiting are over!  The RTW crew is finally tackling their first Voyager episode, and you know how much the gang loves THAT show!  It's not just any episode, though.  It's Threshold, widely considered to be one of the weirdest, if not worst episodes of the whole show, perhaps of the whole franchise.  Join us as we dive into this delightful mess and  try to understand how this makes any...

137 - Rivals (2x11) 09.08.2018

Are you feeling lucky? PUNK? Well, the Reopening the Wormhole crew feels damned lucky in that this week they're getting the opportunity to talk about RIVALS, the luckiest episode of all of Star Trek! Yes, it's time for us to dive into Miles O'Brien's descent into infant-like temper tantrums, Bashir's unending search for a full bottle of ketchup and Quark's unlucky run-in with an El-Aurian con man!...
