Luke 3:21-4:13 | JD Summers Jesus is the Son of God. What does that mean? It means that he is beloved by God, endorsed by the Father to accomplish his mission. It means that he, Son of God and Son of Man, represents us as the better Adam. And it means that he passes the test where we fail, and that we can look to the Son of God as our savior!

The ministry of John was a prophetic ministry, and like the prophets before him, his message honed in on the necessity to repent. We do well to listen to John’s words today and wholeheartedly turn to Christ in sorrow, confession, and contrition, embracing the grace of repentance God offers to those who believe.

It isn’t enough to know that Jesus came. We need to know why. Jesus came to die - to be the savior. We can see this in his dedication, in the response of Simeon and Anna in the temple, and in his actions at the temple. Jesus is the savior who came to provide redemption. Let us praise him for his gracious love!

The birth of Jesus brings together all the necessary pieces for God’s plan. God accomplishes his purpose in sending his Son to become a man and bring salvation to those with whom he is pleased. His birth enraptures those around him with joy and this joy reverberates to ends of earth and the ends of time. Let us join with Mary, Joseph, and the shepherds in praising God for the birth of the Savior!

Luke’s account leads us to a glorious moment, a prophetic word from the lips of Zechariah, the father of John the Baptist. Healed of his muteness, he bursts out in proclamations of God’s power to save, covenant faithfulness, and incredible mercy.

The divine Son of God takes on true humanity through the virgin birth, which is essential because salvation can only come through a divine-human mediator. Jesus brings the divine power to accomplish salvation, which means that sinners can rejoice! Let us bring praise and honor to the king in all his beauty!

God’s Word is essential to the life of the Church. It allows us to see Jesus Christ as he clearly reveals himself. It encourages us by reminding us that we are citizens of heaven. And it gives us the sure hope of a secure destiny. Let us seek God in the Scriptures and commit to keep his Word.

What is revival? It is a reawakening, a coming back to life, a rising from the dead. Revival depends absolutely on the power of Christ, and any emotional experience not driven by his Spirit is not true revival. It also requires a response to Christ’s Word. While we must insist that our church be unified on the gospel, we must avoid controversies on other matters. The church is made up of people whom we are called to love, not to prove wrong or belittle due to differences of opinion. For the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ, let us refuse to divide over petty matters and rather seek to outdo one another in love and glorify our savior who died for us.

Humility is essential to unity as a church. We must pay attention to our inner desires for pleasure or fame and instead seek ways to serve others and glorify Christ. The power of the gospel produces humility in his servants, and when we utilize this power we both imitate Christ and glorify his name.
