Jesus says, "Let what you say be simply 'Yes' or 'No': anything more than this comes from evil." In other words, speak the truth and keep your promises. Jesus says to his disciples, "You are the salt of the earth." That's an identity and an agenda.

Jesus says, "Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you." I. Disciples may be hunted and hurt...

"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God," says Jesus. I. Why are peacemakers called sons of God? II. What is a peacemaker? III. How does peacemaking show itself in the lives of disciples of Jesus?

Jesus says, "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God." I. What is the blessing? Seeing God! II. Who may see God? Only the pure in heart. III. How may I have this pure heart, so that I may see God? 

"Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy" says Jesus. What is mercy? How does it work? Where do I get it? What’s the blessing? How important is this, really?

"Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied," says Jesus. What is this desire? What is it they desire? How do they receive what they desire? What's the result? And how do I get this desire if I don't have it? 

"Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth," says Jesus. What is meekness? What isn't it? How does it show itself? Where do you get it? What's the blessing of inheriting the earth got to do with it?

"Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted," says Jesus. I. Christians mourn their own evil and sins. II. Christians keep on mourning their own evil and sins. III. Mourning ones are promised comfort: Christlikeness, forgiveness, and everlasting freedom. 

Jesus says, "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." What is this blessing? How are they blessed? Who are the blessed? How does it show?

What do the weary need? The servant of the Lord. I. He's a disciple skilled in God's Word, v4. II. He's a sufferer submissive to God's will, vv5-6. III. He's a believer certain of God's help, vv7-9. 

The whole world needs justice. God's servant will establish it. I. See how necessary he is, v1. II. See how delightful he is, v1. III. See how unusual he is, vv2-3. IV. See how successful he is, v4. 

God consoles his distressed people with the promise of the Messiah. I. The comfort of God's forgiveness, vv1-2. II. The coming of God's glory, vv3-5. III. The constancy of God's Word, vv6-8. IV. The care of God's shepherd, vv9-11. 

The Messiah is foretold, who will bring life in death. I. His ancestry, vv1,10. II. His adequacy, vv2-5. III. His achievement, vv6-9. IV. His attractiveness, v10.

I. 700 years before the coming of Jesus, God promised his suffering people a hero to rescue them. II. He brings light into darkness (vv1-2), liberation to the oppressed (vv3-5), and leadership to God's kingdom (vv6-7). III. How is he qualified? He's the Wonderful Counselor, the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, and the Prince of Peace.

What was the character of the ministry of Jesus? I. The comprehensive ministry of Jesus, v23. II. The compassionate ministry of Jesus, v24. III. The crowd attracting ministry of Jesus, v25. 

I. Having announced his kingdom, what does Jesus do? He builds his kingdom by calling its first citizens and ambassadors. II. Who does he call? He chooses four common men. III. Why does he call them? For fellowship and responsibility, however costly.
