Redeemer OC Podcast
Redeemer is a Church in Orange County, CA (redeemeroc.org). We love Jesus and we love Orange County. Jesus is at the center of all that we are and all that we do. He is at the center because He is that good, and we need Him that much. Jesus is here in Orange County, He is here at Redeemer. He transforms disaster into abundance, joy and laughter; he strengthens, deepens, and treasures relationships. He promises to speak to us through the preaching of the scriptures. May you hear Jesus' voice and be challenged, encouraged, loved, and transformed.

Ten Rules for Life 05.03.2023 32:42
In Deuteronomy 4, Moses exclaims, “What great nation is there that has a god so near to it as the LORD our God? And what great nation is there that has statutes and rules so righteous as all this law?” This Sunday we’ll consider The Ten Commandments, the summary and center of God’s law. We’ll hope to grow in our understanding of these ten rules for life, as well as the Christian’s response to al...

A Blessing 19.02.2023 32:19
We all crave blessings. We crave blessings from our family members, spouses, friends, employers, and other people of influence. We long for people to delight over us, to wish us well, and commit to seeing us flourish. This Sunday, we’ll continue our Bible in a Year series by entering the book of Numbers and focusing on Numbers 6:22-27 - where God speaks his most famous blessing over his people....
The Day of Atonement 12.02.2023 30:34
This week we’ve come to the place where most Bible in a Year plans crash and burn, Leviticus! In it, as Jen Pollock Michel writes “the sacrificial system is described in gruesome detail, including what must be done with the blood, fat, and entrails of each animal slaughtered for human sin. It's a book filled with smoke and scent, and a river of blood runs through it: drained, collected, and spat...
Dwelling With God: God’s Teaching in the Tabernacle 05.02.2023 41:45
Exodus 25-40 gives detailed instructions about how the Israelites were to construct the Tabernacle within which they were to worship the LORD. While texts like these can be intimidating and dense, in this week's sermon, we will be explaining how these seemingly arcane building manuals actually point us to the heart of the Covenant and a renewed understanding of life with God. See you on Sunday! Pa...
Water from a Rock 29.01.2023 28:12
This week we will follow the freed Israelites in the desert as they journey toward the promised land. Along the way, Exodus 17 records a most unusual miracle—God provides for his people with water from a rock. Later in Scripture, in 1 Corinthians, Paul explains the most unusual meaning to this event—“that rock was Christ.” See you on Sunday! Pastor Josh
Moses at the Burning Bush 22.01.2023 30:31
This Sunday, in Exodus 3, we will encounter God at the burning bush. We will hope to leave changed--like Moses was--knowing the God who hears the pleas of his people and is mighty to save. I look forward to seeing you on Sunday. Pastor Josh
To Cut a Covenant 15.01.2023 37:05
Covenants are counter-intuitive in our society. Traditional marriage vows sound wild to our modern ears. Do couples really mean, “for better or worse, for richer or poor, in joy and in sorrow”?! We live in a culture full of convenient agreements, compared to binding relationships. When peoples’ perceived agreement is broken, or too hard, they often will try and get out of their contract. This S...
The Storyline of Scripture 08.01.2023 24:23
The Bible is a story that leads us to Jesus Christ. Even though we are only in the first week of our readings, there have already been significant developments in the storyline of Scripture, including the creation, humanity’s fall into sin, judgment, and the promise of redemption. This Sunday we’ll consider these developments and hope to be in a position to better appreciate the story as a whole...
How do I read the Bible? 01.01.2023 27:16
As you know, we are reading the Bible together in 2023 and we start our reading plan on the first Monday of the year, January 2nd. For many of us, this sounds like a daunting task. We wonder, how do I read the Bible? That’s the question we’ll take up this Sunday and hope to leave you more equipped to read the Bible in the new year. Pastor Josh
Christmas Homily 25.12.2022 13:01
The wait is almost over! Tomorrow evening ushers in a new season, a season of rejoicing and feasting as we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ together. For Christmas Eve we will sing the great Christmas carols we love, interspersed with scripture readings ("lessons”). The celebration will continue the next morning with a special Christmas Day worship service. To help build your anticipation,...
Behold, the Lamb of God 18.12.2022 31:02
During this season, we remember the advent, or coming, of Christ. But why did Christ come? What was the purpose of the incarnation? This Sunday we’ll consider what John the Baptist said about Jesus to answer that question. Pastor Josh
The Word Became Flesh 11.12.2022 19:09
This Sunday we will consider a single sentence of John’s magisterial prologue. We do so, since there is no sentence that is so critical to your understanding of the incarnation and your celebration of advent, as John 1:14, “The Word (logos) became flesh and dwelt among us…” We look forward to seeing you on Sunday Pastor Josh
The True Light Comes to the World 04.12.2022 27:39
If you were tasked with writing a great treatise about Jesus, how would you begin? John says something that at once captured and intrigued his audience: “In the beginning was the word… In him was life, and that life was the light of men.…The true light...was coming into the world.” Join us this Sunday as we continue our Advent series in the prologue of John’s Gospel. Pastor Josh
The Light Shines in the Darkness 27.11.2022 23:40
“Advent begins in the dark.” These words are a famous description of the season of Advent from Fleming Rutledge. As we enter Advent this Sunday and prepare to celebrate Christmas, we remember that the world is not the way it’s supposed to be. On one hand it’s “the most wonderful time of the year,” but on the other hand it’s one of the darkest times of year. In Genesis 1 God spoke over the darkn...
The One True God exists as Three Persons that are Co-Equal 20.11.2022 25:40
This week we conclude our sermon series on the Trinity by completing our summary sentence of the doctrine: The one true God exists as three persons that are co-equal. In pursuit of this doctrine, we’ll consider the Trinity in Jesus’ baptisms, the baptism he received at the beginning of his ministry as well as the baptism he commissions after his resurrection. We look forward to seeing you on Sun...
Renewal Begins in the Dark 13.11.2022 36:12
On Sunday we are fortunate to have a guest preacher, Rev. Justin Edgar from City Presbyterian Church in Albuquerque. This is his introduction of Psalm 143: I have a low tolerance for the dark. Whether it is dark emotions…sadness, frustration, low grade anger, anxiety, fear…when I run head on into these, my tendency is to find artificial lights to cope. Food, drink, shopping, tv, phone…anything to...
The One True God Exists as Three Persons 06.11.2022 40:21
Last week Pastor Josh began our sermon series on the Trinity with the idea that there is but one true God. This Sunday Pastor Derek will continue the series with the idea that the one true God exists in three persons. To best prepare for Sunday, take time to read, meditate, and pray through John 14:1-31. As you do, notice and reflect on the truths of the Trinity in that chapter. I look forward to...
There Is One True God 30.10.2022 28:13
Can you explain the Trinity? How would you respond if a neighbor asked you this question? Over the next three weeks we will consider the essential truths we affirm when we speak about God as triune. This Sunday we begin with the idea that there is but one true God. Pastor Josh
The Warnings 23.10.2022 27:40
We love to receive blessings from Jesus, but not so much warnings. Jesus began his Sermon on the Mount with a list of blessings, and he concludes it with four back-to-back warnings. If we’re honest, these words from Jesus are scary. It’s a section we sometimes skip over because it makes us feel uncomfortable. However, instead of skipping over it, we’ll dive deep into it and embrace those hard feel...
Judge Not 16.10.2022 25:44
Which of Jesus’ teachings, do non-Christians, like the most, but fault Christians for keeping the least? Think about that… what is your answer? I suspect the answer is found in Matthew 7:1, which we will consider in church this Sunday. See you then! Pastor Josh
