As Jesus sat down with His disciples, He instituted the New Passover. This was pictured in the similarities between Christ and the passover lamb. But unlike the firstborn sons in Egypt at the first Passover, Jesus is the Son whom God did not spare so that we may be spared. The Pharisees believed that by strictly obeying the law (cleaning the outside of the cup) they were acceptable to God (by having an inward cleanliness). Jesus sets them straight by reminding them of the weightier matters of the law - justice, mercy, & faith.
