Belief is the insistence that the truth is what one would “lief” or wish it to be. The believer will open his mind to the truth on condition that it fits in with his preconceived ideas and wishes. Faith, on the other hand, is an unreserved opening of the mind to the truth, whatever it may turn out to be. Faith has no preconceptions; it is a plunge into the unknown. Belief clings but faith lets go.

I believe in the importance of the cross in the Jesus story. It is not my intention to pull any punches on your behalf but to say how I see it. I was taught to defend a dogma, not engage a conversation, that kept me from being open to new ways of seeing things for much of my life. In almost all circumstances, the quest for certainty overshadows the quest for truth. Within that scenario, ‘truth’ becomes manipulated to fit a specific narrative thereby giving the appearance that the certainty being offered is beyond question which is of course, the object of certainty – to place things beyond question. It’s time to let truth have its rightful place.
