本经叙述释迦牟尼佛应韦提希夫人之请，为信众讲述修三福、十六观等往生净土的方法 ，以十六观系住人们的杂念，除掉人们的妄想，显露西方依正庄严的圣境。 修十六种观想得以从此岸到达彼岸之门，若观想成功，必能亲眼见到极乐世界的依、正庄严，蒙佛授记，去除无量劫业障生死之罪。
