乾隆十六年至四十九年（1751—1784），乾隆皇帝六次南巡，往返于北京与江南。满洲皇帝及扈从，深入帝国zui富庶、zui重要的地区，上演了一场场长达数月之久的政治剧。 本书主要阐释帝国核心与江南之间既充满张力又持续博弈的关系。无论在政治、经济还是文化上，江南都是汉人无可争议的中心，它还是反清复明的大本营。清廷如何才能在这一地区建构quanwei，合法进行统治？盛清时期清廷统治内地的切实条件和历史机制又是什么？本书在解决这些问题的同时，还探讨了盛清统治得以建构以及各种人物竞争于其间的政治文化。作者认为，南巡在十八世纪清朝统治的历史形成过程中具有核心地位。
