在西欧民族主义思想史中，向来就有“政治民族主义”与“文化民族主义”的分野，而厄内斯特·勒南则被许多研究欧洲近代民族主义思想的西方学者视为“典型的政治民族主义者”。黎英亮编著的这本《何谓民族（普法战争与厄内斯特·勒南的民族主义思想）》立足于勒南以及相关人物的著作、通信以及档案，对勒南的民族主义思想进行梳理和诠释。同时，通过将勒南的思想置于思想史的纵横谱系与特定语境中进行讨论，也有助于克服个人思想研究中经常出现的“只见树木，不见森林”的狭隘取向，突显思想史研究的历史感。
