PHNX Rising Football Podcast

After dispatching a mediocre Miami FC side on Saturday, it’s time for Danny Stone’s Phoenix Rising side to take on a different kind of challenge. It’s the first time they’ve ever made it to the last 16 of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, and on the slate for Wednesday is a Seattle Sounders side that represents Rising’s first competitive fixture against Major League Soccer opposition since 2014. Phoenix Rising came out with a strong starting 11 against Miami FC and it showed early on. Rising capitalized on poor Miami passing out of the back as Fede Varela chipped Miami’s keeper in the 36th minute. The first half scoring continued as Edgardo Rito opened his scoring account in the 43rd minute. Rising’s defense held the rest of the way with Rocco Rios Novo keeping his kit relatively clean. J...

With both teams coming off 120+ minutes of mid-week Open Cup matchups, it was always going to be interesting to see how the tactics played out in this matchup. Both clubs came out with heavily rotated lineups yet still had more than enough to play for. While most of the country was watching softball, Detroit scored an absolute belter within the first 10 minutes, putting the emphasis on Phoenix to...

Phoenix Rising played a wild 120+ minutes against North Carolina FC in the Open Cup last night. They’ll have to recoup quickly as they play a very game Detroit City FC squad who went to penalties in their Open Cup matchup, knocking out the defending champion Houston Dynamo after penalties. Can Phoenix take points off of a Detroit side that is undefeated at home in 2024? Join Max Simpson and Jake A...

This is why we love the Open Cup. If you were to tell us Phoenix Rising would score in the first 10 minutes, we’d feel optimistic. If you were to tell us Phoenix Rising would be down to 10 men after the first 25 minutes, we’d feel less so. Both happened for a Phoenix team that battled for 120 minutes against a North Carolina who were down to 9 men themselves. Open Cup Chaos strikes again. Join Owa...

Phoenix Rising clawed their way back to equalize in the second half against a game Sacramento Republic squad. Rising had their chance in the first half when Panos Armenakas stepped up to the penalty spot. While the ball did hit the back of the net, the kick had to be retake with the attacker putting in wide on the second attempt. In the second half, Rising continued to search for options. Luck wou...

Phoenix Rising displayed their most complete performance of the season, dispatching the first-year Rhode Island FC 3-1 in a match where they took control early and held late. A first-half brace by Remi Cabral saw the visitors control the tempo early and allowed the defense to have an event-free stretch…that is until a late penalty call threatened Rising’s momentum. Rocco Rios Novo stood tall and d...

It wasn’t great. Against a team that had scored just once all season, Phoenix Rising conceded three and possibly should have conceded a fourth. Remi Cabral’s first half equalizer proved insufficient for Phoenix to get anything against Pittsburgh Riverhounds, and the team still sits in the bottom half of the Western Conference table. But can Rising get back to winning ways against former owner Bret...

Phoenix Rising leave with nothing after a 3-1 defeat against a staunch Pittsburgh Riverhounds side. Rising didn’t make it easy for themselves, conceding the opening goal in the 26th minute. While they did equalize before the half, it was a downhill second half. Despite a few half chances, Phoenix never really built upon their momentum from the tail end of the first half. Join Owain Evans and Max S...

Coming off of a three goal performance away from home, Rising fans wondered how this team would fair returning back to Phoenix Rising Stadium. With a reshuffled lineup, the club created chances from outside the box throughout the first half. Yet a scramble off of a corner kick led to captain John Stenberg tapping home the lead for Phoenix in the 71st minute. Join Owain Evans and Max Simpson to cap...

It hasn’t been an ideal start to Phoenix Rising’s USL Championship title defense. So far, it’s just four points from five games. But can Danny Stone’s side begin to turn that around with a pair of home games against Colorado Springs Switchbacks and Pittsburgh Riverhounds? So far, despite adding star striker Ronaldo Damus, Switchbacks have yet to record a single positive result and have scored only...

Remi Cabral and Dariusz Formella finally got off the mark in Phoenix Rising’s hard-fought away draw against FC Tulsa. The visitors scored three goals in that match, after only scoring one in the four games prior. But with set-piece defending and an Emil Cuello red card letting Phoenix down, was that match really a step in the right direction? Join Max Simpson and Owain Evans to discuss. An ALLCITY...

Phoenix Rising entered this match having scored one goal in their previous four matches in relatively uneventful affairs. Tonight’s matchup against FC Tulsa featured a bit of everything.
