Different than failure, our flaws are at the root of who we are, not just in what we do. They cause us pain, they wound people around us. Because of that, most of us are tempted to hide our messy-but-true selves from the world. To be truly human isn’t... While it’s good to stand out, it’s not good to stand alone. Too often we confuse the two. We end up living life independently, believing that to be successful, we must distance ourselves from others. True humanity is found in needing each other... One of the oddest things we do is we take people who have been crafted individually, uniquely, diversely by our creator God and we try to make them all the same. There is nothing more dehumanizing than that. While conformity is an important part of... Failure is not only a part of everyone’s experience, it’s a tremendous teacher. But failure is painful to experience and to admit. Too often we’re tempted to avoid failure by living with an abundance of caution, avoiding all risks, or even quitting... America is still a “Christian nation” but no one knows for how long. Birthrates among historically “Christian” populations are way, way down while birthrates of some other religious groups remain very high. Not only is the face of America changing... The world is hurting. Through technology and globalization it’s now possible to see the true state of the world. Everywhere you look there is hunger, disease, poverty, and victimization. Religious intolerance. Threats of imprisonment. Beatings. This is the sad reality of many Christians worldwide. Even in our own country, we fear the rise of persecution and what it will do to the future of the Church. But when we study Acts we see, in... Jesus’ death and resurrection didn’t actually change much, at least not right away. 40 days after his resurrection he only had a few hundred followers at best. And yet, everything changed when the Holy Spirit was given on the day of Pentecost. An... Judgment is what keeps us trapped in secrecy and silence. Either we have already felt judgment or we fear judgment if people knew the full story on us. And yet, we still have a hard time stopping ourselves from judging others. The solution to both our... If shame is a prison, silence is the warden. Silence over our past, our pain, or our sin keeps us stuck in shame. But when it’s doused in empathy, shame can’t survive. The problem with empathy is that it doesn’t come cheaply, the price is... Shame is the secret cause behind many forms of brokenness that are rampant in our world. Although estate plans are important, your job is bigger than planning for who gets your earthly possessions. The greatest blessing to leave the next generation is a love for God and an understanding of how to manage what he’s entrusted to you. These... Sometimes in trying to bless others, we can end up hurting (even enslaving) those we’re trying to help. How can we use our abundance to help people with needs, but ultimately encouraging them to become God-reliant and self-sufficient? The greatest danger of being blessed is that we can become not only self-sufficient but self-reliant! Many of us live lives that are so full that we seem to fall in love with the world and worse, grow beyond our need for God. How do we stay reliant on... One of the greatest tragedies in life is that our good and generous God gives us blessings that we don’t feel free to enjoy. The loss of the word “steward” in our vocabulary signals a loss of an important concept, namely, we are not owners. For years people who were divorced, experienced same-sex attraction, or became pregnant out of wedlock were driven to the outskirts of society, shunned and shamed. The idea of “sin” is confusing. Some things the Bible calls sin certainly seem sinful while others are harder to understand.
