In Genesis 15, Abraham was given two promises, he was promised that his descendants would be as numerous as the stars of the sky and he was promised a land that they would inhabit. Abraham wanted assurances from God that this would take place, God gave him the assurance of the covenant. What do we have as assurance that God's promises would take place?

Before the flood, we read about the results of mixing of the godly seed of Seth and the ungodly seed of Cain. The hybrid seed grew, matured and resulted in the totally depraved mind of man with his thoughts continually on sin. God cursed the serpent, Satan telling him that although he would bruise the heal of the woman's seed, the woman's Seed would crush his head. This is the first gospel message in the Bible. We see that Jesus did crush the serpents head at the cross. We get to participate in that victory, but, like in the garden itself, it still requires obedience.
