In this sermon, we examine two more elements of Christian civilization, family and property. God's law protects both of these because they are foundational elements of society. These are to be guarded from other men as well as guarded from the state. The more the state takes from family and property, the less liberty and freedom people have.

The book of Hebrews was written shortly before tremendous persecution. Chapter 13, the concluding chapter has several thoughts in quick succession, so that it was much like a Post Script to the main body of the letter. These were geared toward preparing the Christian Hebrews for the coming persecution. The first three thoughts were centered around the unity of the brethren.

2 Corinthians 2:11 says that we are not to be ignorant of Satan's devises. Exposing his devises from the pulpit is a significant task of every minister. It is important to pursue peace with all men and holiness lest we fall from grace or we let any root of bitterness spring up within us. This is what Esau allowed in his life, and this is what we are at risk of allowing in our lives if we aren't surrounded by a community of brethren, in holiness.

Hebrews 12:1-2 comes immediately after the faith chapter and the cost of the faith. Many will ask, "How can I do this?" This chapter begins with the word, "Therefore", which then answers the question, it gives us the "how to" in order to run the race of faith and run it well.

After the list of those who were faithful in the Old Testament, Hebrews gives us a list of things they did as they were victorious over their circumstances. There is also a list of the things the faithful did that were victorious while they were living under the circumstances as well. This sermon examines king David and Bathsheba in light of what had already happened to king Saul. David had been faithful to Saul, but Saul got distracted from his primary purpose. David also got distracted and he too had issues that he had to deal with. David risked by like Saul and having his kingdom removed from him. Unlike Saul, David repented and his repentance was total.

David had opportunities to kill Saul. In fact those with him saw it as God delivering Saul into David's hands just for that reason. David declined to do so, and forbid those with him to take Saul's life. Instead, he determined to wait for God's timing as to when he would become king. Although he knew he was anointed to become the next king, he refused to usurp God's process.
