The Bible is a story consisting of many stories, interwoven with themes and images that build to a glorious finale. Sometimes, as we read the Bible, we get lost in the woods, focusing on the trees and missing the forest. Let’s step back and rejoice in the bigger picture. God at one point calls Abraham to do the unthinkable, to sacrifice his beloved, promised son. God uses this test in Abraham’s life to extend His promise to all people for all time. Abraham does not come from a perfect family. His family included broken people too. Yet, God still works through this broken family to create a new people that would fill the entire earth. Jesus does not randomly appear in human history. His coming is planned for centuries. He comes at just the right time to reveal a new direction and a new end in the unfolding plan of God.
