Oldham Lane Church of Christ

Words are like bricks. They can be used to build a hospital or to throw through a window. Water can quench your thirst or flood an entire town. Fire can cook your food or burn down your house. Likewise, words are neutral in and of themselves. It’s how we use them that determines whether they are worthwhile or worthless.

Each and every member should approach church from this perspective—what can I do to contribute to the health and vitality of this congregation? How can I make this body better? What do I bring to the table? What am I doing to ensure that the Lord’s church that meets here at Oldham Lane is fulfilling its purpose?

As Christians, we become what we put on. Let’s put on our “Jesus suit” and adorn ourselves with the character of Christ.

Spiritual growth is a choice. Jesus said that it requires labor (Jn. 6:27). Paul wrote that it requires work (cf. Phil. 2:12; 3:13-14). Peter stated that it requires diligence (2 Pet. 1:5, 10). Spiritual maturity is an on-going, persistent, continuous process. It is a concerted effort. It is also a command.

There comes a time when we must stop praying and start doing.

What if we didn’t just make church a part of our lives? What if, like our first-century brethren, the church was our life? What if?

How we respond to a crisis is more important than the crisis. When tough times hit, we will respond the way we have been trained to respond. Hopefully, our knee-jerk response is to hit our knees.

Espresso is a very popular variety of coffee. It’s the result of water being forced at high pressure through finely ground coffee beans and extracted in small concentrated amounts. The result is full flavor that provides a powerful punch. That’s what prayer is, or at least it should be. Our prayer life should be full of flavor and pack a powerful punch.

Christians should be the most grateful people on the planet. If we have nothing else, we have salvation; something we did not deserve. That is more than enough reason to rejoice. We are all unworthy slaves who, even at our best, are only doing only what we should be doing.

Building a kingdom culture in our home means having one priority, not competing priorities. One priority. Our little family is an extension of God’s kingdom, which means that we destroy all idols, we embrace kingdom values, and we live upside-down.

If you want to be prepared for Jesus’ second coming, then live like His first coming mattered.

What makes a mother a “wonder woman” is her spiritual strength as she battles the foe and his forces of evil. She may embody some, most, or all of the characteristics of a Proverbs 31 woman. But above all else, this “wonder woman” is dubbed as such because she returns her child to its rightful owner. She gives her child back to the King.

Playing it safe doesn’t take faith. Paul didn’t play it safe. The apostles, after the resurrection and ascension of their Lord, didn’t play it safe. We can’t play it safe either. Faith demands that we take risks.

Our homes should be a little city of refuge. A fortress of solitude where, no matter what’s going on in the world around them, our children can find peace and security. It should also be a place where they find wisdom and instruction. Most importantly, it should be a place where they find God.

Our attitude, our mantra, our livelihood should reflect the statement made by Isaiah—“Here am I. Send me!” This isn’t about whether or not I should go. The issue isn’t about where I would rather go. This is about going where God has called us to go—into all the world, making disciples of all nations; baptizing in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

The goal of family is to be a visible portrait of God. We are to be a reflection of the US who created us. We were made to be image-bearers.

Each year the shepherds at Oldham Lane lead the congregation in prayer for our students and teachers as they begin a new school year.

This life is filled with chatter. It’s filled with distractions, and some of it is good stuff. Some of it is absolutely necessary, but a lot of it is nothing more than white noise. We often waste our wait with this chatter when we should be filling our wait with something better.
