Old St. Pat's Podcast
Old St. Patrick's is a Roman Catholic community in Chicago's bustling West Loop neighborhood, founded by Irish Immigrants on Easter morning in 1846. Since then we have grown into a home to a membership of about 4,000 households and innumerable friends. As we grow, we continually redefine what it means to be an urban church. We are committed to remaining open to new visions and possibilities, seeking broader horizons as we journey into our future. We encourage you to encounter the God who loves you, engage in a community that welcomes you, and serve the world that needs you. This podcast aims t...

That’s the vision we’re stepping into here at Old St. Pat’s. Rooted in the love of the Holy Spirit — we are embracing a renewed mission. To be a church that welcomes and a church that heals. Before We Breathed - Fr. Jack Wall 6.1.25 03.06.2025 14:17
Have you ever wondered what it really means to be one with someone, to be connected in a way that shapes who you are? Before we ever spoke a word or took a breath, we knew communion. We just didn’t know we knew it. We sat there in the womb — totally in communion with our moms — totally one, totally dependent. Our whole biological reality took shape through that oneness, that quiet, unseen nurture....

It’s that time of year when caterpillars complete their quiet transformation and emerge as something new - butterflies, ready to spread their wings and fly. We have moments like that, too. A Story of Mercy & Second Chances - Fr. Pat McGrath 5.4.25 06.05.2025 13:19
Have you ever felt like you messed up so badly that there was no coming back? Like you disappointed someone—or even God—so deeply that forgiveness felt impossible? This past Sunday, we heard the story of one of the most powerful moments of mercy: when the risen Jesus meets Peter, the same Peter who denied even knowing him, and offers not punishment but restoration. Three times Peter said, “I don’t...

Liberating Mercy - Fr. Pat McGrath 4.27.25 29.04.2025 17:03
Today, we’re talking about fear—the kind of fear that doesn’t just make us nervous, but locks us up. Fear can freeze us in place, tangle us up in knots, paralyze us, and make us feel like we’re letting ourselves and others down. It’s easy to get stuck, to feel stagnant and shut away from the life we’re meant to live. And often, we put pressure on ourselves to work up the courage or force ourselves...

A lot can happen in a week. And if you’ve been paying attention to the news or reflecting on your own life, you probably know that all too well. In one moment, things are smooth and joyful; in the next, we’re hit with grief, surprise, or uncertainty. It can feel like we’re on a rollercoaster of emotions. That emotional ride is what we step into during Holy Week. The Passion of our Lord isn’t just...

Angels, Devils, and the Daily Choice - Fr. Paul Shelton 4.6.25 08.04.2025 13:59
It’s a powerful realization, isn’t it? To know that we are complex human beings—beautifully flawed, constantly evolving. We’re all a bit like those cartoon characters with the angel on one shoulder and the devil on the other. Every day, we’re faced with a choice. And in that choice lies the tension between good and evil, between judgment and mercy, between who we think we are—and who God is callin...

Love That Defies Logic - Fr. Ed Foley 3.30.25 01.04.2025 22:47
On a day dedicated to pranks, tricks, and making each other look a little foolish, have you ever thought of God as a fool? A fool in love? The world celebrates IQ, emotional intelligence, business acumen, and creativity—but are those the things that truly define a successful life? Society tells us intelligence is about strategy, success, and getting ahead. But wisdom tells a different story. And G...

Planted with Purpose - Fr. Tom Hurley 3.23.25 25.03.2025 17:39
Farmers must carefully tend to their crops in order to do a good job. A good seed needs the right environment—sunlight, water, nutrients, and space—to truly thrive. Without the right conditions, even the best seed won’t produce fruit. We are the same way. Our environment matters. The people around us, the care we receive, the love and patience we’re shown—these shape us. And just like the gardener...

Lent & Listening: What Is God Saying to You? - Fr. Jayme Stayer 3.16.25 18.03.2025 13:17
In the rush of daily life, it’s easy to be pulled in a thousand directions—distracted, drained, and defined by what we produce. But did you know that silence is the decoy of the Holy Spirit? We allow God’s voice to break through the noise when we embrace stillness. Silence isn’t about doing—it’s about being so we can connect with God. Today, Father Jayme Stayer invites us to slow down, take a deep...
