Notes by Northwest

There are a bunch of new to me artists featured in hours 2 and 3, and unlike last week, no technical issues. Hope you enjoy, its always fun to find new artists from this corner of the country who have great sounds. 

This is the lavendar season in Sequim, WA, and the first hour was devoted to lavendar songs (yes) and songs about flowers and other growing things.   Halfway through the second hour there were some technical difficulties on the live broadcast, which I handled with a degree of aplomb.   

The first hour includes patriotic songs by PNW artists, plus state songs that celebrate the diversity of this still great country. Happy Birthday, USA.  

The first hour features an edited interview with Dana Lyons, a folk singer-activist in the vein of Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger.   Based in Bellingham, I interviewed him at the Finn River Cidery where he was performing a benefit concert on June 1, 2025.

This wasn't the originally planned first hour--it was like the scene in Broadcast News where they're trying to get something on the air.  You'll hear the originally planned segment next week, and I'll spare you the gory details.  This program included less of the 50s-60s "old stuff";  I did feature a Beach Boys song to honor the passing this week of Brian Wilson, the...

Lots of new music in tonight's show, along with some old favorites. 

My favorite song on this show had nothing to do with the PNW, but I played "Birthday" by The Beatles in honor of my father's 89th birthday during the first hour.  Love you, Dad. 

The May Day show began with Pete Seeger's version of Roll on Columbia, appropriate for someone who dedicated his life to social equity.  More meaningful in today's environment.  Also included a song by Seattlite Judy Collins, who celebrated her birthday today.  Plus a duet by WIll Worden to celebrate his birthday yesterday.   And a much of other stuff, including some grunge origin bands...
