In Deuteronomy 5:1-21 Moses records the famous Ten Commandments summed up by Christ as loving God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength, and loving our neighbor as ourselves.  These commands form the basis for all godly living, but they are not just commands.  They are rooted in the gospel in that the gospel provides the motivation and ability to keep them.

Here Moses concludes his great exhortation to the people of God based on their history. His emphasis is that nothing has ever happened like the exodus and therefore the people of God must serve him. If this was true for God's people in the OT, how much more is it true after the coming of Christ?

2020 has been a difficult year for everyone, Peter is writing his letter to Christians who are struggling. In this passage, Peter addresses the relationship between Christs exaltation and the Christians suffering in 1st Peter 3:19-22.

Exile and restoration is one of the great themes developed in the Scriptures which Christ fulfills by bringing his people back from exile into God's presence. Here Moses prophesies of such times.

Why is it better to suffer for good than for bad?

It is important that we honor God in how we worship him. You cannot worship an invisible God with visible images.

Godly suffering gives pause to those who see it, and it glorifies Jesus. In these verses Peter shares the reasons and the command to do so.

Just as the people of God came to the mountain the first time, the new people of God have come and heard God tell us that Jesus is His son. May God give us the grace to remember the glory of Christ and so to listen to him.

Peter now summarizes generally how we are to treat both our brothers and sisters in Christ and those that are not, in mind and spirit.

Our lives and behaviors are to be a witness of what He has done for us. For the same reasons that Moses tells the Israelites, we must constantly seek to follow his commandments.

One of the greatest issues in society today is the failure to submit to the authority that God has placed in our lives.

Even the hardness of mans heart is used for the advancement of his kingdom and to fulfill His purposes. God's power is unlimited, and the christian is meant to take comfort in His infinite Sovereignty.  What is man's responsibility?

As His child, when He put your sins to death, He also gave you the strength to suffer well for the sake of the kingdom of God. If your life begins to look like our lord Jesus Christ's life in your righteous suffering, then like Jesus, your life will surely end in great exaltation.

We must have patience in faith and count our needs as an abundances because this reminds us that our strength is through Christ alone.

God fulfills his promises.  Just as the Israelites wandered for years in the wilderness, our lives sometimes seem like a wilderness.  Just as God provided for the Israelites, he sustains us today.  Do not cheapen the promise, be ready to enter his promised land .
