1st Samuel 13:1-15 Saul's Disobedience (August 27, 2023 PM, Rev. Michael Grasso) 28.08.2023

In 1 Samuel 13:1-15 Saul’s reign begins to unravel. He fights against the Philistines and appears to have some success, but once things appear dire, he disobeys God causing Samuel to tell him that he will lose the Kingdom. True service to God, even when things are difficult, entails obedience.

Matthew 15:1-20 Tradition vs. The Heart (August 27, 2023 AM, Rev. Michael Grasso) 27.08.2023

In Matthew 15:1-20, Christ not only affirms the supremacy of the Word of God over tradition, but also highlights the danger of traditions that nullify the Word of God.  The tradition of the Pharisees focused on externals, whereas the Word of God focuses on the heart.  Very often traditions that contradict the Bible give people a false hope on the basis of external conformity to manmade laws rather...

1st Samuel 12:1-25 Samuel's Warning (August 20, 2023 PM, Rev. Michael Grasso) 20.08.2023

In 1 Samuel 12:1-25 Samuel gives a final exhortation to the people highlighting the sinfulness of their request for a king once again.  Judgment, however, is not the final word.  Samuel affirms that God will be with His people if they are faithful to Him.  Ultimately, both the people and the king need God and must be faithful to Him.

Joel 2:12-19 Rend Your Hearts (August 20, 2023 AM, Rev. Michael Grasso) 20.08.2023

The session of New Covenant OPC has called for a quarterly fast to beseech God to pour out the Spirit that the Church might be built.  In fasting Joel tells us to “rend our hearts” not our garments.  Fasting ought to be done to humble oneself before God that we might cry out to him for help in our need.  Given the state of the church and the proliferation of great sins in our country, it is not go...

Luke 9:46-50 (August 13, 2023 PM, Rev. Wayne Forkner) 13.08.2023

Guest sermon from Pastor Wayne Forkner.

John 10:27-28 The True Christian (August 13, 2023 AM, Dr. Ben Walters) 13.08.2023

Ben Walters reads a sermon from J. C. Ryle.

1st Samuel 11:1-15 God Uses Saul for Good (August 6, 2023 PM, Rev. Michael Grasso) 06.08.2023

In 1 Samuel 11:1-15 Saul fights against the Nahash, the Ammonite, and defeats them.  His victory foreshadows Christ’s crushing the head of the serpent.  Though Saul’s reign will be a disaster, God shows that He is able to use Him to His own righteous and good ends.

Matthew 15:1-20 Tradition vs. The Word of God (August 6, 2023 AM, Rev. Michael Grasso) 06.08.2023

Luke 9:18-27 (July 23, 2023 AM, Rev. Wayne Forkner) 23.07.2023

Guest sermon from Pastor Wayne Forkner.

1st Samuel 10:17-27 Be Careful What You Ask For (July 16, 2023 PM, Rev. Michael Grasso) 17.07.2023

In 1 Samuel 10:17-27 Saul is publicly chosen as King.  Samuel reiterates the sinfulness of the request and yet God still gives the people what they want.  Such is the danger of making sinful requests of God.

Matthew 14:34-36 Recognizing Jesus and Going to Him for Healing (July 16, 2023 AM, Rev. Michael Grasso) 16.07.2023

Matthew 14:34-36 contains a brief summary of Christ’s healing ministry. Those who recognized Him went to Him for healing.  The natural response of understanding who Christ is is to go to Him for salvation.

1st Samuel 10:1-16 Gifts vs. Grace (July 9, 2023 PM, Rev. Michael Grasso) 10.07.2023

In 1 Samuel 10:1-16 Saul is privately anointed king of Israel and is given signs of confirmation which culminate in the Spirit coming upon him and turning him into “another man”.  Saul receives the benefits of the work of the Spirit, and yet his reign is disastrous and he likely was not a believer.  How then are we to understand the work of the Spirit in this context?  We are to understand that th...

Matthew 14:22-33 The Son of God Walks on Water (July 9, 2023 AM, Rev. Michael Grasso) 09.07.2023

In Matthew 14:22-33 Matthew records Christ’s miracle of walking on water.  His walking on water, like the feeding of the 5,000, is meant to be compared to Elisha who made an axe head float.  Christ, however, has done much more both by walking on the water and by commanding Peter to do so as well.  The disciples understand the significance as they respond to this miracle by worshipping Him as the S...

1st Samuel 9:1-27 Do Not Judge by Outward Appearance (July 2, 2023 PM, Rev. Michael Grasso) 03.07.2023

In 1 Samuel 9:1-27 Saul, the king like the nations, is introduced.  He is described as a great man, from a noble family, who is humble, and receives the Word of God.  Surely, if having a king like the other nations is going to work it will with Saul.  His reign, however, will be disastrous.  The example of Saul teaches us not to look on outward appearance but to trust in God who sees the heart.  S...

Matthew 14:13-21 The Feeding of the Five Thousand (July 2, 2023 AM, Rev. Michael Grasso) 02.07.2023

In Matthew 14:13 -21 Matthew records the very familiar miracle of Christ feeding the 5,000. What does this teach us about Christ? That he is the better Elijah who feeds more with less, the better Moses who provides manna in the wilderness, the Messiah who sets before His people a glorious feast, and ultimately, the one who is Himself the bread of life who satisfies His people.

1st Samuel 8:1-22 A King Like the Nations (Part 2) (June 25, 2023 PM, Rev. Michael Grasso) 26.06.2023

In 1 Samuel 8:1-22 the people ask for a king “like the other nations”.  This, however, is contrary to the will of God.  One distinction between the kings of the other nations and kingship in Israel is the king’s relationship to the law and more particularly to God.  If the king is under God, then he is subject to God’s law.  If he is subject to God’s law, then his power is limited.  If, however, t...

1st Corinthians 11:2-16 Glory to Go Around (June 25, 2023 AM, Rev. Calvin Goligher) 25.06.2023

Guest sermon from Pastor Calvin Goligher.

1st Samuel 8:1-22 A King Like the Nations (Part 1) (June 18, 2023 PM, Rev. Michael Grasso) 19.06.2023

In 1 Samuel 8:1-22 the people ask Samuel for a king like the other nations.  This is understood by both Samuel and God to be a rejection of God.  Why is this the case?  The reason is because God was fighting the battles of the Israelites, but they thought that they needed a king like the nations to do this.  This illustrates a general principle: When people turn away from God, they will often put...

Matthew 14:1-12 John's Persecution and Death (June 18, 2023 AM, Rev. Michael Grasso) 18.06.2023

In Matthew 14:1-12 Matthew recounts John’s arrest and execution.  Christ will say in chapter 16 that anyone who follows Him must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow Him.  The Christian life is one of suffering and it is important to be ready, especially as persecution is likely to increase in our country.

Hebrews 11:1-7 (June 11, 2023 PM, Rev. Jonathan Merica) 12.06.2023

Guest sermon from Jonathan Merica.

Matthew 22:34-40 (June 11, 2023 AM, Rev. Jonathan Merica) 11.06.2023

Guest sermon from Jonathan Merica.

1st Samuel 7:3-17 Samuel Defeats the Philistines (June 4, 2023 PM, Rev. Michael Grasso) 05.06.2023

In 1 Samuel 7:3-17 Samuel leads the people at the battle of Ebenezer.  The account of this battle parallels the account of the devastating battle of Aphek, and the point is to contrast these battles. In the one God’s people are routed. They put their confidence in the ark of God rather than the God of the ark.  In the second, God wins a great victory for His people. Why? Because they showed true r...
