What if the point of prayer has very little to do with getting God to do stuff for us? What if we've gotten prayer all wrong?

By the time Jesus came on the scene, Jewish religious leaders had developed elaborate rules about making promises. Jesus addresses this in the Sermon on the Mount, saying that there are proper ways to use words in our relationships.

An idea that sets Jesus apart from all the other teachers and philosophers is this: love your enemies. There are those who teach pacifism but Jesus is the only one who takes it further and says love your enemies. What Jesus presents is not pacifism; it's something that's actually much more difficult.

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus uses six relational situations to compare and contrast his ways to the ways of the Pharisees, the fundamental religious leaders of the day. One of those situations was anger.

Salt and light. Jesus was very deliberate when he used these two metaphors to describe the manner in which His followers love, bless and engage the world.

As we begin exploring the teachings of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount, Forrest Jenan paints a picture of the historical, religious, and political landscape of the 1st Century. Jesus begins his teaching provocatively by announcing that the Kingdom of God is for everyone.
