The government will pour $50 million into two critical minerals processing projects on the West Coast. The companies receiving the money are the Taiko Critical Minerals project in Barrytown and Westland Mineral Sands near Westport. Minister for Resources Shane Jones spoke to Guyon Espiner.

A significant deluge struck Otago overnight with flooding, evacuations and road closures from Dunedin right up to Oamaru. In Oamuru an evacuation centre has been set up as part of a state of emergency called for the Waitaki District. Waitaki Mayor Mel Tavendale.
