This year at sundown, September 25th, Shofars will sound in synagogues the world over as Jews celebrate the Day of the Blowing of the Shofar, Yom Teruah, which is commonly known as Rosh Hashanah. While it is not one of the Levitical Feasts commanded by God, it is based on Esther 9:21, where the tradition to celebrate is advanced by Mordecai, one of the main characters in the Book. The feast of Hanukkah begins this year at sundown on Sunday November 28. The Hanukkah Menorah is an integral part of the holiday observance, since it represents the miracle of one day's supply of sacred oil burning for eight days in ancient Israel.
