Prayer is an emphasis in this gospel. It is a personal thing between you and God. Prayer is a way to communicate with God, to make our requests known to God. God will provide what is needed. Through prayer, fear is replaced with faith, anxiety with trust, and greed with generosity. 

The question of how to inherit eternal life appears twice in this gospel. Jesus came to give eternal life. It is not just about receiving but also about living an eternal life now and manifesting compassion. 

Interpersonal forgiveness is part of Jewish tradition, and forgiveness of sins against God comes in multiple forms. However, it was unheard of to be done by a “person”. Jesus broke the norm when He declared that “the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins” (Luke 5:24). God is always ready to forgive the repentant sinner. Faith is key.

When Jesus read the scroll in the synagogue, it foreshadowed what He was here to do and the rejection He will face. One of the first things Jesus did was to heal a man with an unclean demon. During His ministry, there was an emphasis on cleansing. Jesus chose to identify with the outcast; His mighty power cleanses all. 

Who is Jesus and where did He come from? The baptism and genealogy of Jesus confirm the identity of Jesus and His mission. The baptism correlates with Isaiah 42:1 and hints at the work to be done. The genealogy is traced all the way to Adam, showing Jesus to be God’s promised Saviour for all people, Jew and Gentile alike.

The first words of Jesus recorded by Luke were said in the temple, and it sets the tone for what follows in this Gospel. Jesus grew up in a godly environment, the temple being the core of it. From the accounts recorded in the temple, we will see how the temple plays a key role in the faith of people.

In Ecclesiastes, we find the question: “What profit has a man from all his labour in which he toils under the sun?” What profit is there in life when viewed from an earthly perspective?
