Jesus University Part 3

Part two of four-week series Jesus University looking at how Jesus teaches and trains his disciples in Luke 9 and 10.

In the last week of this class, Patrick leads us in a discussion of Jesus' final hours with his disciples. We look at the Last Supper, the events in the Garden of Gethsemane, and Peter's Denial.

Justin leads us in a discussion of some of the non-miraculous deeds of Jesus, including the Triumphal Entry and the Cleansing of the Temple. There is also a fascinating and beautiful discussion of the anointing of Jesus by Mary of Bethany.

Judges 16: 1-22 Samson has ruled over Israel for 20 years but he still hasn't learned his lesson. We find him in Philistine territory seeking the woman of his dreams named Delilah. These two are as toxic as you can get. Both sucking the life out of one another. This is only scratches the surface of Samson's problems. He's about to break covenant with God and all of his supernatural favor with God...

Austin takes us through all four Gospel accounts of Jesus' mass-feedings (of four and five thousand, respectively). We find some interesting textual evidence that suggests how it is the disciples knew just how many people were there, as well as that the two feedings were distinct.

Justin continues our discussion of Jesus' teachings. Instead of focusing on Jesus' parables, though, we focus on his discourses (sections of longer teachings or sermons, like the Sermon on the Mount).

Judges 16: 1-20 Samson is to be the deliverer of God and Israel won't have it. They reject Samson to the point of binding his hands and handing him over to the Philistines to be killed. All this just to keep a mediocre peace. The result of delivering Samson up to death is that Samson single handedly takes on the entire Philistine army with the jawbone of a donkey and wins. Samson is the poster boy for what life looks like when lived according to what is right in one's own eyes. His life is one of lust, greed, and vengeance. He looks very much like the Philistine culture that he is regularly imbibing. Where does this kind of living come from and what can be done about it? Judges 13: 1-25

Patrick leads us through a discussion of Jesus' parables, especially those parables that are focused on the Kingdom of Heaven. There is overwhelming evidence that the reports about Jesus' teachings in the Gospels are in fact the historical teachings of Jesus.

This week Austin leads us through a survey of all four gospels' testaments concerning John the Baptist. We find a remarkable amount of support for the historicity of the gospels. There is some very interesting discussion of the language of the gospels and the native language of Jesus.

October 21 :: Gracious, Great, Good by MERCYhouse

Justin leads us through a discussion of the Census, as reported in Luke's Gospel, as well as the flight of the Holy family from Bethlehem to Egypt. The geo-political issues are fascinating and we learn just how sensitive the Gospel writers were to the geographical, political, and cultural issues of Jesus' day.

In this meeting, we begin to put our detective tools to work. Patrick leads us through Matthew and Luke's infancy narratives, including a focus on the genealogies and the records of Jesus' birth. We find a great deal of support for the reliability of these accounts, as well as some apparent discrepancies that prompt helpful discussion.
