Who we are governs what we think, which anticipates how we behave. In this section of Ephesians, Paul writes that a Christian's identity is as a dearly loved child of God. 

In Ephesians 4, Paul shifts from what it means to be a Christian to describing how Christians are meant to live in light of the Gospel. 

Ephesians 2:1-10.  Paul gives a deeper understanding of our sinfulness, but also of God's grace and mercy. He further explains that we are saved not by good works, but only by grace through faith. 

In the opening chapter of the letter to the Ephesian church, the apostle Paul tells us of the sovereignty of God. He explains that God chose His children before the world was created and adopted them into His family. Matthew 6:7-18 Jesus had already taught that we should pray, and He continued by teaching us how to pray. In the Lord’s Prayer, Jesus gives us a model to help shape our hearts and deepen our affections for God. He followed it with the command of fasting. Neither of these are tasks for the religious elite, but acts of obedience that flow out of a love for God that help us know Him.

Matthew 6:1-6 Jesus taught on two of the most practical spiritual disciplines — giving and prayer. He commanded these external acts from His followers, but He was clear that the true internal motive behind them will also be known by God. Jesus’ focus was not external behavior modification, but internal heart transformation.

In this section of Jesus’ sermon, His followers were met with arguably the most challenging call of the Christian life. He commanded them to withhold retaliation from and even go the extra mile for those who wrong them. He also commanded them to love and pray for their enemies. Drawing from the sixth and seventh commandments, Jesus covered the topics of murder and adultery in sequential fashion. He showed that the evil thought that provokes evil action is equally deserving of punishment. This week we will be challenged to face our own inner thoughts and desires in light of a holy God.

Contrary to most western ideologies, Jesus did not denounce the Law of the Old Testament. Instead He raised the bar by saying that His followers’ “righteousness” must exceed that of the religious elites of their day.
