After looking at the internal qualities needed for a church to live in unity, Peter continues the letter with instructions on suffering. Suffering isn't meaningless. God can use it for not only our good but also for the spread of the gospel. Peter calls all believers to look to Jesus as our example of living in a God-honoring way while suffering.

Primarily, people want something from us. Primarily, God wants something for us. Primarily, Wildwood wants four things for you.

Jesus Christ is the grand personage in the Bible, and love is the greatest theme. Christianity is not a story of morality, heroic figures, or laws and commandments. It is a story of sacrificial love and grace. Today as we light the advent candle of love, we will focus on how love is manifested in Creation, the Incarnation, the present ministry of the Holy Spirit, and throughout eternity.

Joy is the smile of the soul. C.S. Lewis once noted that- “Joy is the serious business of heaven.” In the life to come, joy will permanently mark the people of God. In the here and now, joy can truly be experienced. While joy starts in the heart, it manifests in the face.

Various Scriptures

We are called to live lives that honor God by respecting others. A life of honor/respect is the most compelling way to point others to Jesus.

Peter continues his exhortation by focusing on the response of slaves to mistreatment. Slaves, as those with no rights, become a model for all Christians who may well be despised and rejected in the world. But the mistreatment toward Christians should not be a shock to his readers. The whole book is full of allusions to suffering. But their suffering is simply in line with the treatment of Jesus....

Peter now turns our attention to how we live a life of submission to God in this world. In this section, he covers the government. Later he writes about work and the home. A keyword in this section is honor. We are called to live lives that honor God. We honor God by respecting others even if/when we disagree with them; and even when they wrong us.

After fleshing out what it looks like to have a living hope, Peter reminds the people that God will never stop working. Jesus gave a promise to Peter that He would build His church. Peter remembers those words and calls the church to trust in what God is doing.

The first thing Peter writes about is God. He points the church to what God has done, what He is doing, and what He will do. God guarantees our salvation. We then can rejoice in our salvation. Even though life is hard, we have hope. And that hope is a living hope.
