Growing up, math was a constant challenge for me, and I often needed multiple tutors to help with homework—sometimes three in a single day. While overwhelming at times, their support eased my frustration and tears. It wasn’t until I was diagnosed with NLD at 19 in college that I finally understood why math had been so difficult. Many neurodivergents have a hard time being on their own and independent because of it being hard to be independent without help from your family. I work for my parents and have for four years. And have lived with them for 6 years so I get it. But I’m fortunate to have had help from my family to get my own first place! For me it was my accommodations I had in college. I was able to record the audio of lectures. Had audio version of textbooks and extra time on tests. I took the test in a room with fewer distractions and by myself. I also was able to have my ESA dog Truffles with me in the exam room. I used Kurzweil 3000, audio-noteaker and sonocent.
