By coming from Heaven to Earth to dwell among us, Jesus provides the perfect example of someone who is willing to walk towards the complicated and the uncomfortable and He calls those who are His followers to do likewise.

Do you find the Christmas story unbelievable? Angels appearing, a virgin birth, a star guiding the way, it all seems well a little unbelievable. Yet, by looking at the people in the Christmas story you see that they too found it unbeliveable and they were in it. 

We all want a sign to know that God is real and what He is like. Yet Jesus made it clear, there is no better place to look in order to know what God is like than to look directly at Him.

The Christmas season can be a bit messy. It’s always been a bit messy because we’re all a bit messy! In fact, our messiness is the reason there’s a Christmas in the first place.

Most of us live trying to balance the demands of work with personal responsibilities as well as trying to have fun. But we tend to be left feeling overwhelmed, restless and stressed out. Yet what if God offers us a pattern that enables us to thrive? 

As Christians we are called to live in a way that wins the respect of those outside of the faith. Unfortunately we are often found doing the very things that lose respect. This message looks at the two things that are needed in the workplace for us to win the respect of those around us.

Culture tells us we should work ethically, not exploitatively. While this is a good thing what if we could work in an even better way? A way where we refuse to exploit people and places, where we are ethical but we take it a step further and are redemptive?

Seeing work within the context of the meta narrative of the Bible helps us see and understand how God uses our everyday work to bring renewal and redemption to his creation. The amazing thing is we can chose to partner with Him in this, and if we do, it helps us find meaning and value no matter what work we do. 

Most people look at work as being either a necessity, something they have to do in order to live, or they make it an idol and define their life by their work. Yet what if there is a third way, a better way to see work. One that helps us bring our best to work no matter what that work is while keeping our work separate from our identity.

This week we conclude our Let there be Light series by exploring what it means for us to go and be people of the light. To bring hope in dark places because after all, if not us - then who?
