Last week the Ketchikan City Council voted to amend its lease with the shelter on Park Avenue, cutting hours of operation for part of the year; the average rent for apartments in the state increased by 7 percent last year; and an influx of federal funding is fueling cabin construction on Forest Service lands.

Tonight on the KRBD Evening Report…. An arrest has been made for an arson fire that destroyed Ketchikan’s American Legion post Sunday morning, one Southeast municipality is beefing up efforts to tackle garbage bear problems, and proposed federal changes to fisheries management in the Gulf of Alaska could dramatically affect the amount of allowable bycatch.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has denied a petition to put Alexander Archipelago wolves on the endangered species list, federal grants are helping two Alaska tribes bring culturally important objects home, and what began as an effort to clean up Sitka’s streets has turned into a scientific study.

A fire aboard the ferry Columbia sent about a dozen people to the hospital due to smoke inhalation, State Senator Bert Stedman speaks out about some tough decisions the Legislature will have to make to protect the Permanent Fund, and we’ll hear about municipal seats open in some Prince of Wales Island communities and who has filed so far.

Tonight on the KRBD Evening Report…. House District 1 Rep. Dan Ortiz has filed for reelection. We’ll hear about some of his priorities if he wins his bid. More chinook were landed than expected during the first summer troll opening, and the state has launched a new system allowing survivors to track their sexual assault evidence kits confidentially. Tonight on the KRBD Evening Report…. Filing for municipal office opened on Tuesday and the field is growing. We’ll hear about who’s filed so far up until 2 p.m. Wednesday. The Alaska Marine Highway should see three new ferries within the next four years, and two swimmers successfully crossed a seven mile stretch of Frederick Sound near Petersburg.
