Knowing God With Heart and Mind

Religion EN ↓ 675 episodes

Our fundamental goal is ”knowing God.” The essential assumption is that the Bible is God’s message to humanity so that God will be known and loved by God’s Creation. The Bible is sufficient in and of itself, so that thoughtful study of it will lead to ever-increasing intimacy with God. Each week we’ll endeavor to engage Scripture and tradition and to bring them into our present reality. Since I am a working pastor I will use the same sources for this podcast that inform my weekly preaching and teaching duties. These days I am drawing upon the Revised Common Lectionary. This examination of the...

Revelation Bible Study Episode 9 18.05.2018

The church at Philidelphia is truly blessed. In his letter to them Jesus essentially compares and contrasts them with Sardis - big, rich, pretentious verses small, poor, and humble. Jesus says they will hold fast and be a pillar in heaven.  Psalm 10 music is from the following  YouTube Knowing God with Heart and Mind  Facebook group

The Holy Spirit: Pt. 2 14.05.2018

How much do you know about the Holy Spirit? Is the Spirit a person or a thing? Does the Spirit still do things in the world today? Why do you think Jesus had to leave for a while? What do you think about churches where the Spirit is celebrated and accepted with exuberance and uncommon behavior? What about the “frozen chosen” or churches who love the Lord, but remain placid with regard to the Spiri...

Revelation Bible Study Episode 8 11.05.2018

Jesus's letter to the church at Sardis is a sobering reminder to all modern American churches. It is far too easy to get comfortable with "church" and totally miss the coming of our Lord.  Psalm 9 music is from the following  YouTube Knowing God with Heart and Mind  Facebook group

The Holy Spirit: Part I 07.05.2018

Matthias Who? 30.04.2018

This week we will consider the apostle Matthias. What are we to think about the apostles whose stories have been lost through history? Did they do anything that mattered? Was it all about the big three or four named apostles? Suppose the story of Matthias is there to remind us that we are very important to Jesus, but we don’t need to be important anywhere else? Can we live with that?

Revelation Bible Study Episode 6 27.04.2018

In this week's episode we visit Pergamum, where Satan has a throne. We hear Jesus's letter to the Church there and find that they are up against some pretty challenging stuff.  Psalm 7 music is from the following  YouTube Knowing God with Heart and Mind  Facebook group

The Church Age 23.04.2018

In this message we will consider the expectations expressed by Jesus in Acts 1. He foresees his disciples bearing the message and the marks of his salvation. Jesus expects his disciples to take them to friends and neighbors, to communities and regions, to fearful places near and far. With new sight and power from the Holy Spirit we can courageously join in the fulfillment of our Lord’s vision.

Not Enough Words 16.04.2018

When the Apostle John says, “I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written [about Jesus]” - it’s not about the words and deeds of Jesus, but the depth of his being. There has never been a more unique person than Jesus, nor will there ever be.

Revelation Bible Study Episode 4 13.04.2018

This week we begin reading Christ's letters to the 7 churches. Revelation 2:1-7 is Jesus's report card for the church at Ephesus . . . and who else?  Knowing God with Heart and Mind  Facebook group

My Lord and My God 09.04.2018

Have you ever heard someone say, “You doubting Thomas”? It’s an unfortunate label that was given to the Apostle who missed the first meeting with our resurrected Lord, Jesus. He simply couldn’t wrap his mind around what they told him. Can you? Why don’t we remember Thomas for his beautiful, spontaneous confession of, “My Lord and my God!”?

Revelation Bible Study Episode 3 06.04.2018

Pastor Dan and Bethany continue the current study starting at Revelation 1:9 this week. John wrote Revelation to encourage Christians to resist the cult of emperor worship and to stand firm during persecution. Jesus, the Mighty One, cares for us and stands with us. No matter what we face, He gives us His love and power. But in the end, judgment must come.(Max Lucado) Knowing God with Heart and Min...

God So Loved 19.03.2018

As we prepare to enter another holy week of recalling the passion of Christ, it will serve us well to be mindful of the motivation behind it. Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday will each tell a story that is familiar to many of us, but not to all. Therefore, we must start with the reason for these peculiar events and the common misconceptions they incurred then and still...

Getting Ready to Triumph 19.02.2018

This Sunday we return to the story of Joshua and the people of Israel. We will witness the unique ways in which God triumphs. As we look for God at work in our midst we must understand that God selects the way for us that often goes against normal thinking. Getting Ready to Renew 05.02.2018

There are times in our lives when, like Israel, we find that we have been disobedient and unfaithful to God, or at least out of step with what God desires for us. When such times occur, we must renew some important commitments and understandings: 1. We need to renew our grasp of God's plan for our lives, because God is committed to completing what God starts in the lives of God’s people. 2. We need...
