Out of control anger and Loyal Friendship, this week we are comparing the differences between Jonathan and Sauls response to David after he has killed Goliath. Jonathan responds with love and loyal friendship, whereas Saul responds with anger and tries to kill David. Davod responds by looking to God for help.

Today we meet David, the main character of the book, and we are introduced to him through three contrasts: with his brothers, with Saul, and with Goliath.

Today we’re looking at 1 Samuel 13 & 15 and Saul’s deceptive journey into sin. This contrasts with David who write Psalm 51 after he sinned, which is a journey of honest repentance. Finally, we look to Jesus who made the journey from heaven to the cross to deal with sin and offer forgiveness to all who will turn to him.

1 Samuel 14 might be the most insightful chapter in Scripture on the nature of biblical courage: what it is and how we grow in it. Jonathan and his armour-bearer show us that Christian courage is collaborative, theological, and contagious.

Samuel takes an opportunity in his farwell address to remind the people of the faithfullness of their God and exhualts them follow him with their whole heart!

In 1 Samuel 8-10 we see the transition of God’s people from a people led by judges to a monarchy. And it isn’t a smooth transition. The people make what seems a reasonable request for a king, but in effect it’s a rejection of the one who has been faithful to them. After God warns them of the consequences, they press ahead. But God, in His grace, takes their unfaithful request and works it for good...

Today’s passage sees the ark of the covenant captured by the Philistines, who quickly realise that they have made a mistake and give it back to Israel. Both nations discover that neither idols nor warriors can stand before a holy God.

Over the last few weeks, we’ve looked at the significance of the death and resurrection of Jesus. We are often very familiar with the last supper, but this week we will be looking at the “first breakfast” in John 21. In this sermon we will look at how Jesus recommissions the disciples and what that means for them and then in turn what this looks like for us in 21st Century London.

This week, we are looking at the resurrection appearances of Jesus to the women and the disciples in Matthew 28. We can identify with their responses which are filled with emotion: they are afraid yet filled with joy, worshipping Jesus yet some are doubting. Jesus calls them all to follow him and go into the nations, believing He has authority over all things and He is with them.

When the disciples heard the news that Jesus had risen from the dead, they reacted in two very different ways. Most of them dismissed it; Peter investigated it. Those two reactions to Easter Sunday are still being played out today.

In the final week of our Reach series, Andrew considers how we actually proclaim the gospel: what it is, why it’s good news, and how we show that it is good news.

The early church thrived and multiplied through a band of emboldened disciples who sought to fulfill the Great Commission to fill the ends of the earth with the glory of God. But they were not always so bold, and in Sunday’s message Andy examines the transformation of Peter from a fearful wreck to a courageous proclaimer of the gospel.

Reaching people involves answering questions as well as asking them. In Acts 22, Paul gives an “apologetics masterclass” in how to answer, and there is lots that we can learn from him.

Jesus often reached people by asking them questions. Andrew considers some from the start of John’s Gospel, and consider what they can teach us about reaching people today.

What does it mean to be a follower of Jesus? He makes it clear from the outset that it isn’t a passive thing but involves being caught up in his wonderful mission of reaching people. We see this in pattern in the way he calls the first disciples to follow him.
