We live in a fearful generation, for all sorts of reasons. Peter wants disciples to live fearlessly – in marriage, in suffering and in judgment – and in this chapter, he shows us why and how. Andrew Wilson is our Teaching Pastor.

Faith, hope and love are the central virtues of Christianity, and they make it distinctive in a pagan world. In this passage, Peter grounds each of them in imperishable realities: our future, our ransom, and the life-giving Word of God. Andrew Wilson is our Teaching Pastor.

Peter addresses various kinds of trial in this very pastoral letter. But he does not start by focusing on the trials; he starts by focusing on the Living Hope we have in Christ. Every December, people sing about ‘the thrill of hope’ as ‘the weary world rejoices’. That idea of rejoicing in the midst of weariness, because you know that hope is on its way, is central to Christmas – and central to Christianity. The stories of Zechariah and Elizabeth and the Wise Men are about people who waited in hope, who moved, who journeyed in hope. The book of Nehemiah has a rather puzzling and disappointing ending: after all the rebuilding and rejoicing, it turns out that idolatry is still here. Nehemiah confronts it, and shows us how deep idolatry goes—and how it ultimately needs someone greater than him to remove it.

Singing is central to Scripture and at the heart of the Christian life. Today Andrew asks why that is, and how God’s people sing thankfully, corporately, noisily and joyfully.

Nehemiah chapter nine comprises of a heartfelt prayer of confession from the children of Israel as they recount the goodness of God over many generations, and face the facts of their sin and rebellion.
