Episodes

Journal Updated 19: Late Shift 01.10.2021

We're back with another Journal Updated! This month we took it waayyy easy and played a short little title that we actually saved to the last minute. It's a really endearing little excursion, though we don't have TOO much to dig into. But man games can be fun!

Journal Updated 18: Deus Ex 01.09.2021

Welcome back to Journal Updated! This month we're joined by our first two-time guest Hannah to discuss the 2000 conspiracy fiction classic, Deus Ex! The shadow of this game is pretty long, or used to be, but most of us found it...not really deserving of that in 2021. We have a good time though!

Journal Updated 17: Undertale 01.08.2021

Welcome back to Journal Updated! This month, we talk about the 2015 modern classic Undertale. You've heard of it, you've maybe even played it. It's here. We talk about metatext, the inescapable crush of culture, and Tamsyn Muir's Homestuck fanfic. It's a great episode.

Journal Updated 16: Bioshock 13.07.2021

Welcome back to Journal Updated! This month, we talk about the 2007 FPS Bioshock, sometimes called an immersive sim! We hate that though. We also don't like this game very much. It's fine, but unrefined and chock full of weird racism. Would you kindly give us a listen all the same?

Journal Updated 15: Tyranny 01.06.2021

Welcome back to Journal Updated! This month, Nora & Molly are joined by Em of Abnormal Mapping to chat about Tyranny, an Obsidian-developed crpg that fails to make much of an impression!

Journal Updated 14: Disco Elysium 01.05.2021

Welcome to another Journal Updated! This month we head to the rundown town of Martinaise to solve a murder! And I guess some other things happen too. There's a bug. This was a weird recording! Sometimes it's like that.

Journal Updated 13: Fable 31.03.2021

Welcome to another Journal Updated! This month, Nora is plagued by technical difficulties and Molly is completely relaxed of it. This is a weirdly spicy ep, I don't know what to tell you. Seems like Fable sucks.

Journal Updated 12: Radical Dreamers 01.03.2021

Welcome to another Journal Updated! This month, we played the 1993 Satellaview SNES game Radical Dreamers, which is connected vaguely to both Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross! We probably spoil a bunch of stuff in those games! I've never played Cross so I just kind of assume this stuff is a twist or reveal. Anyway, Molly is vetoing most text adventures moving forward.

Journal Updated 11: The Banner Saga 01.02.2021

Welcome back to Journal Updated! This month, Nora and Molly pack their bags and head out into the merciless winter with the Banner Saga! We talk swords, snakes, and story structures as we ponder our lot in a world of dead gods and evils both mysterious and mundane. Next month's game: Radical Dreamers After that: Disco Elysium

Journal Updated 10: Pyre 01.01.2021

Welcome back to Journal Updated! This month, Nora and Molly are joined by guest Autumn as they don their robes and masks and initiate the rites to win their freedom! We talk sports, revolution, and justice, and why we think Pyre...doesn't really have any cogent ideas about any of those things. Next month's game: The Banner Saga After that: Radical Dreamers Music: Limit 70 by Kevin MacLeod Link: ht...

Journal Updated 09: Mass Effect Andromeda 01.12.2020

Welcome back to Journal Updated! This month, Nora and Molly are joined by guest Hannah as they all set out on a one-way trip to the stars with Mass Effect Andromeda! Will this be the best Mass Effect game? Well yeah, but no one knows what that means. This game was twice the size of the last one and we all struggled to finish it, but we did! That's a wrap on Mass Effect, and a wrap on 2020. We'll b...

Journal Updated 08: Dishonored: Death of the Outsider 31.10.2020

Welcome back to Journal Updated! This month, Nora and Molly pull off one last job in the Empire of the Isles: kill God. To do it they'll need a handful of sweet new powers and some of the coolest levels in the Dishonored series, and Arkane was happy to oblige. Join us for a final sendoff of the Isles, the Void, the Outsider, and Billie Lurk! Next month's game: Mass Effect Andromeda After that: Pyr...

Journal Update 07: Mass Effect 3 01.10.2020

Welcome back to Journal Updated! This month, Nora and Molly finish the fight and close out the Mass Effect trilogy for good. No more biotics, robots, broken models, swerve endings, or genocide apologia. Just questions. Lots and lots of questions. What a weird messy thing. Next month's game: Dishonored: Death of the Outsider After that: Mass Effect Andromeda Music: Limit 70 by Kevin MacLeod Link: h...

Journal Updated 06: Dishonored 2 01.09.2020

Welcome back to Journal Updated! This month, Nora and Molly set sail for the edge of the world to stop a conspiracy hell bent on putting a bad king on the throne! It's Dishonored 2! Grab some bonecharms, crack open a nice refreshing Addermire Solution, and join us as we talk shop about Arkane's return to the Isles. Next month's game: Mass Effect 3 After that: Dishonored: Death of the Outsider Musi...

Journal Updated 05: Mass Effect 2 01.08.2020

Welcome back to Journal Updated! This month, Nora & Molly continue their journey through the Mass Effect series with 2010's Mass Effect 2! Come on by and give us a listen as we talk about what a reprehensible piece of shit this game is and how absolutely evil the industry that made it is. You can follow the show on twitter at @JournalUpdated, and send us emails at journalupdated@gmail.com!

Journal Updated 04: Dishonored 01.07.2020

Welcome back to Journal Updated! This month, Nora & Molly dig into Dishonored, an industrial fantasy revenge quest released in 2012! They talk about power, kings, and individualist fantasies. Do you think they'll get their own squad after what happened last night? Write in to journalupdated@gmail.com and let us know! Next month's game: Mass Effect 2 After that: Dishonored 2 Music: Limit 70 by...

Journal Updated 03: Mass Effect 01.06.2020

Welcome back to Journal Updated! This month, Nora & Molly dig into the game that launched a thousand ships: it's Mass Effect! Does this late 00s landmark still hold up? Well, no. Actually it's shallow both mechanically and morally, with a side of race science and extra troop respect. But at least we had fun, right? Next month's game: Dishonored After that: Mass Efect 2 Music: Limit 70 by Kevin...

Journal Updated 02: SOMA 01.05.2020

Welcome back to Journal Updated! This month, Molly & Nora learn about bodies, brains, immortality, and fish. We talk SOMA, a spooky game from 2015! We also talk at length about the inevitability of death and the fleeting nature of existence and ask, "are we cynical?" Next month's game: Mass Effect After that: Telltale's The Walking Dead: Season One Music: Limit 70 by Kevin MacLeod Link: https:...

Journal Updated 01: The Outer Worlds 31.03.2020

Welcome to the first episode of Journal Updated! This is a new podcast about narrative agency and choice in video games. And we’re starting things off by staring right down the barrel of video game’s assumption of centrism as natural law by digging into Obsidian’s recent ‘yeet the rich’ RPG: The Outer Worlds. Nora’s Outer World’s piece: https://medium.com/@norafblake/not-the-best-choice-the-outer-...
