Hymnpartial

We're tackling an important topic this week as we dig into the hymn, The Church's One Foundation. We'll be looking into the controversies surrounding the writing of this hymn (and its tune), questioning our attitude towards the church, and reminding ourselves just how much Christ loves his precious bride. All that and more! Follow Hymnpartial on social media: Mailing List: https://www.subscribepag...

We've covered quite a few hymns, so in our newest episode, we thought we'd dig into the history of a hymnbook. We'll be looking into the very special friendship of John Newton and William Cowper and how this led them to create one of the most influential hymnals in the English language: Olney Hymns. To this day, this hymnbook is still used and is something of a monument to their friendship. Learn...

In this, our fiftieth episode (I know, right??), we're bringing you a William Cowper classic we can't believe we haven't talked about yet: There is a Fountain Filled with Blood. There will, of course, be some blood in this episode, but there's also a whole ton of hope and encouragement, and we can't wait to dig into this hymn with you! This week, Matthew David Montgomery joins us to share about his project Psalms for Singing. We talk about instruments in worship, the best psalter for those who are newer to the Psalms, and Matthew shares with us some of his own favourite songs from scripture. There's so much going on at Hymnpartial HQ this week that we're taking a break just to rest and regroup. However, with football season reaching a fever pitch (see what we did there) we'd like to share with you an old classic and well-known football anthem, Abide with Me. Bizarrely, this is a song that has been widely adopted by secular culture in the most unusual ways and for some very odd reasons...

This week, we're talking about a hymn that was more recently revived by the David Crowder band, but actually goes way, way back. Our hymn for the week is All Creatures of Our God and King, but we'll also be taking a look into the tumultuous, yet fascinating life and beliefs of its author, Saint Francis of Assisi. Join us for this new episode on the modern classic, Before the Throne of God above. This week we'll be talking about assurance of faith, giving credit where credit is due, and a hymn that is older and newer than people expect. All that and more! We're excited to share with you this week's episode where we welcome guest, Pastor Brian Croft. He shares with us about his own history in music and worship-leading, some of the musical challenges specific to the work of church planting and revitalisation, as well as sharing with us some of his own favourite hymns. All that and more! You can find out more about Brian Croft and the work of Practica...

In celebration of Hymnpartial's first birthday, we thought we'd take a look back at a few of the lessons we've learned and ways we've been convicted through the last 52 weeks of podcasting. We talk about how we're constantly amazed by the lives of the human beings behind the hymns, how we're convicted by how often we don't pay attention to what we're singing, and we reflect on how the hard work of...

We're continuing our joyful theme with another accidental Christmas carol! In this episode, we talk about why Joy to the World isn't an advent hymn, we have a look at how the Mormons have changed the lyrics to suit themselves, plus we will answer a question from our mailbag. The channel we mentioned in the answer to the mailbag question belongs to Martijn de Groot, and you can check it out here: h...

We decided that our next two episodes would be on a joyful theme, only to discover that by pure coincidence, both the songs are hymns which are frequently mistaken for Christmas songs. In this week's episode, we talk about big fluffy dogs, Romantic era poetry, and pre-WW1 history - although Cara is trying her hardest not to go off down a series of interesting literary and historical rabbit trails....

You asked and we're here to answer as we dig into some of our mailbag questions. There may be some encouragement, there may be some challenges, you'll just have to listen and find out! We'll be talking about songs for those who are struggling, our favourite episodes so far, and we're playing a fun game of Hymnpartial This or That. All that, plus some fun rabbit trails right here! We've mentioned the Queen of Gospel so many times, but this week we're finally taking a look at one of Fanny Crosby's best known hymns, Blessed Assurance. We're going to talk about the incredible life of the hymnwriter herself, hear in her own words how Blessed Assurance came to be written, and we'll be reminded of the unwavering assurance that is ours in Christ. All that and more you never knew!...

What are you reading in your Bible at the moment? This week we'd like to remind you of the excellent hymn, How Firm A Foundation. This is no stuffy classic, it's a wonderful song that talks about the beautiful gift the Bible is, often lifting lyrics straight from Scripture itself. In a world that tries to undermine the Word of God, this is the perfect hymn to remind us to trust the word of the God...

And can it be that we're finally talking about one of Charles Wesley's hymns?? Why, yes it can. In this week's episode, we'll be looking into one of his greatest hits. We'll be talking about Charles Wesley's post-ordination conversion, touching on why some Christians don't like him, and, of course, discussing one of Cara's favourite hymns. We're revisiting the trinity this week as we talk about the classic trinitarian hymn, Holy Holy Holy. In this episode we learn about the short but impactful life of Reginald Heber, and discover where the wonderful themes of this song can be found in the Bible. We also touch on some of our thoughts about Mormons singing (and sometimes editing) what are blatantly Christian songs. All that and more!...

We have another special guest this week, though on a very different subject. In this week's episode, we're joined by Regan B. King to talk about the Bible's view on depression; the life of the hymn writer, William Cowper; and songs Christians can sing to remind themselves of the great hope we have. We also answer a mailbag question about what to do when you don't like the songs your church sings....

This week, we're joined by a special guest, hymn expert and PhD student, Mr D. J. Bulls. We'll be talking about the trinity, the importance of singing to the triune God, and get some really helpful insight into why some traditions shy away from addressing God in this way in their praise.   Find D. His Mercy is More may be a (very) recent hymn, but it's packed with good theology and edifying lyrics, all set to a memorable tune. If there's anything you want buzzing around your head all week, it's the truth that Christ's mercies are greater than our sins. *Regular episodes resume next week.* Also follow us on social media Mailing List: https://www.subscribepage.com/n3z3u8 Website: https://hymn...

This week Cara breaks down the odd and wonderful history of 'Abide With Me'. Why is this plea for God to be with us as we face death a common soundtrack at humanist funerals, Football cups & Indian military events? Tune in this week to find out! We're aware that we have quite a few more recent additions to the Hymnpartial family, so we thought it would be fun to introduce (or re-introduce) ourselves. The funny thing about podcasts is that you can feel like you know someone very well without really knowing much about them, so this week, we decided we'd give you a wee peek behind the mic. In this episode, we talk about how Monet accidentall...

We're back with another beautiful hymn about the glory of God. This time we're blending the old with the new as we learn more about All Glory Be to Christ, a wonderful rewriting of Auld Lang Syne. In this episode, we hear the hymn's story straight from the horse's mouth, Cara goes off on a rabbit trail about the use of traditional tunes in worship, and Monet shows us how saturated in Scripture thi...

We've got everything from the sublime to the ridiculous as we take a look at some of the best (and worst) songs we sing about the love of God. Join us as we discuss some of the cringeworthy lyrics supplied by you, our listeners, play pop song or hymn lyric, and offer up some richer hymns that can remind us of God's incredible love. This week we also answer another exciting mailbag question. All th...
