Holy Trinity + Holy Cross - Sermons

In our society examples of humility are rare. In today's Gospel reading, Jesus tells the Parable of the Publican and Pharisee. These two men who were polar opposites. Both went to the temple to pray but it was the humility of the Publican's prayer that justified him before God.

In today's society people have little trouble finding what they are looking for, except when it comes to God. We must desire and thirst for Christ to enter into a relationship with Him. Today's Gospel lesson from Luke 19: 1-10 tells us of Zacchaios, who desired to see Jesus and he did not let his physical limitations hinder him in his pursuit.

The world can seem dreadful and intolerable. Faith in God as Orthodox Christians avails to us the Grace of God, which in turn helps us move the mountains of darkness and despair in our lives. Though faith and repentance we can receive the light of Christ into the world and our souls.

All Christians are called to witness for Christ no matter our occupation. Today is Jan. 7th and we remember the Prophet and Forerunner Saint John the Baptist who taught us how to direct people to and to witness for Christ.

In our live the perspective we have to things help to shape how we view them. Time is one of those things. How we view time has much to do with how old we are and when we realize that time for us in limited. Through Christ our time can become eternal.

In our world the Nativity Feast can get lost in commercialism. Father Elias returns to his hometown on Christmas morning to celebrate the Nativity. In his sermon he shares with us how easy it is to get caught up the hoopla of Christmas and forget to keep Christ in the forefront.

Jesus called Himself the Bread of Life. In today's Gospel reading taken from John 14:16-24 we here a parable of a man who gives a banquet and invites many to attend. Many of the Church Fathers see this banquet as the Divine Liturgy where we are invited to encounter God through His Word and most especially Holy Eucharist.

Today is Youth Sunday here at Holy Trinity - Holy Cross. Father Micah shares with us that it is better to give than receive. Christmas is all about giving as one of our hymns during this season says. The greatest gift we can give to Christ is ourselves.

On August 15th the Orthodox Church celebrates a Major Feast Day known as The Dormition of the Theotokos. There are three events remembered on this day, her death, resurrection and translation into glorification in Christ's Kingdom. Father Paul reminds us that the Theotokos is our example on leading a pure life hearing and doing God's Word.
