Jim Martin: When Flawed Marriages, Families, and Individuals of the Bible Meet God's Grace Part 1 02.08.2018

Most of us are ordinary. We know all too well that our lives, our marriages, and our families fall short of the ideal. The Bible gives us a candid picture of numerous examples of people, who like ourselves, also fall short of God’s ideal. Join us as we talk about some of these families, the God whom we serve, and his overwhelming grace.

20180729- Investing Like Christ 01.08.2018

Some think the church is doomed, but not Jesus. Jesus is investing himself in the church, so that it can accomplish the purposes he gave to the church. While we at times prioritize other good things above the church (work, family), Jesus does not. His priority is the church. Can the same be said of us? Are we investing like Christ?

20180715- The True You_ The End 16.07.2018

People are fascinated with heaven, though scripture does not tell us much about it. What we do find in Rev 21 is a guarantee that the sin, despair and suffering plaguing this earth will be no more in the new heaven and earth. This “ending” allows us to wait patiently—a virtue.

20180624- The True You_ Finished 25.06.2018

You and I have received the greatest blessing from the one who died on that cross for us. It is all a gift. So don't waste that gift. I beg you do not waste the gift of God's forgiveness. But don't for a second believe that you can earn it. It is a gift. It is the gift. And it is finished.

20180527- True You_ Delivered 29.05.2018

Christians see Jesus-"clues" in the Old Testament. The story of Exodus-deliverance and law-points to Jesus. But we tend to think law conflicts with freedom in Christ. It doesn't. God delivered Israel w/ a substitionary sacrifice, and instilled that pattern in the law. This pattern is what leads us to anticipate and appreciate the substitutionary sacrifice of Jesus.

20180506- Unveiled Chris Shelby 08.05.2018

Chris Shelby guest preaches at Highland about what we learn about the good news of Jesus through marriage.

20180422- Go: Never Strike Terror Again 24.04.2018

Domestic violence is serious, and demands the attention of serious believers. God cares for, and is defending victims of domestic violence through Agape. When we support Agape in protecting women and children, we witness to the Gospel of Jesus’ love for his church.

20180401- Easter: Powerless 02.04.2018

We are powerless. Powerlessness is our entry-point into the Gospel. Once there, we realize that so much depends on the resurrection. If Jesus was resurrected there is a source of power not limited by our powerlessness and darkness. So we take comfort in the resurrection, assured that the Jesus can find us in our darkness, and raise us by his power.

20180325- Won_ Rescued to a New Creation 27.03.2018

The message of scripture, is that we need someone to liberate us. To break us out of this cosmos. So here's the deal: We not only a need a liberator, we need a liberator from outside this world who can actually break the lock. Someone who can call into being things that were not. We need someone who deals in new creation.

20180311- Won- Christ the Victor 13.03.2018

Jesus was victorious over God's enemies at the cross. How? No one ever thought crosses could be victorious. But because the Powers are entangling us in a death grip, Jesus died to disarm and triumph over them. Still, we don't readily acknowledge that we needed this. We only acknowledge it when our sin finally becomes unbearable.

20180204- Warmer_ Whoever Comes Our Way 05.02.2018

Saul probably would not have fit in at Highland. He is a crazy sinner. But one quickly realizes, like Ananias and Barnabas, that being a sinner makes Saul just like the rest of us. They welcome him. Similarly, we should be wary of our pride, and welcome others with the same willingness.

20180114- Warmer_ Speaking Their Language 15.01.2018

What we say matters. God gives language as the first spiritual gift at Pentecost, enabling the early church to speak the language of guests. Those guests hear the Gospel and are converted. We need to strive to speak the language of our guests.

20171210- God Came Near_ The Way of Salvation 11.12.2017

What is Salvation? While on one hand salvation happens in a moment, the Bible also understands salvation as a pathway marked by signposts that correspond to the very character of God—faithfulness, righteousness, peace, and love. The right question to ask is not: can I lose my salvation? The right question is: am I walking in the way of God’s salvation?

20171126- God Came Near_ When But Why 27.11.2017

We have stories that define our lives. Israel’s story is the Exodus Story (Christian’s story is the Jesus story). But trauma rewrites our stories. Yet while we await the final revision of the story—on par with the original defining stories of God—we have a father who is healing us.

20171112- Go_ The Fire in Papua New Guinea 14.11.2017

Missionaries like Joe Cannon have always had the fire burning. But how do you pass on that fire after the missionary is gone. Start churches that mature believers, raising them up to spread the fire.

20171022- Front Page_ Control Syndrome 23.10.2017

We don’t have control, but we want it. Our many responses to the NFL protests prove this. But control is a temptation from Satan. It is bad for marriages. Its not the way the church changed the world. It is a spiritual danger. So, turn over control to the Father.

20170910- Over Our Heads_ What Are We Doing Here 11.09.2017

What are we doing here? Hard to get to church. What are we doing here? World is crazy and Satan is on the loose. Highlanders are serving in so many ways. Like the believers in Rome did. Paul believed God was destroying Satan by the simple lives of service those Roman believers led. God is destroying Satan through us in the same way.

20170820- Over Our heads_ Care 22.08.2017

The future of Israel is unclear. But in summary, Paul says that Israel is still in exile and Jesus is their way home. More importantly, Paul cares deeply for the souls of his fellow Jews. Do we care for those who may be unsaved? Most of the world is attempting to establish its own righteousness and ignore Gods. If we cared for their souls, we would attempt to show them the way that Jesus is the wa...
