As we look to identify the idols in our lives, we need to be aware of our proclivity to worship the cultural norms of our world. We are called to be different from the world. We are a holy people and we can not find our identity in the world. We need to love those in the culture but we can not bow for the culture. When we are looking to identify idols in our life what we will often find is that the true idol we worship most is ourself. This is certainly true when we allow prejudice to get in the way of our love for others. We are called to tear down a mindset that would prefer those "like us". One of the biggest idols facing the western church today is that of politics and earthly power. Jesus has called us not to be citizens of this earth or nation but to pledge our lives to his eternal kingdom.  We check our hearts and lives for political idols by considering what we rely and depend on and checking what our hearts are most aligned with. To know that we are made in God’s image is a fundamentally important truth. Throughout time God’s people have struggles with idolatry (putting things before him) despite of God’s direct command to not do so.  Idolatry in our lives is often rooted in our own insecurities. Each of us will face persecution. Jesus told his disciples this exact thing in Matthew 10. His instructions following this warning were to live with out fear. We are called to live fearlessly.
