Grand View Dubuque Sermons

In week two of Grand View's sermon series, "I Believe," Rev. Tom Shinkle starts to dig into the basic, traditional, agreed upon beliefs of the historic Christian faith - starting with our doctrine or theology of God. Who is God? How does God relate to the world and to you individually? By looking at the creeds and scripture, we focus on God as the perfect father.

Rev. Tom kicks off a new series for a new year by challenging the Grand View congregation to answer, what do you believe? Everyone has their own theology - their own understand of God and God works. In this series, Rev. Tom will look at basic, classic statements of the Christian faith and ask all to think about, "Do I believe this?"

Rev. Tom looks at our natural tendency to have blind spots - in our living and in our faith. What are those things that we may not see clearly, but they are keeping us from Jesus and living the Christian lifestyle? And, how would turning our eyes upon Jesus change us this new year?

As we look at a fresh new year ahead of us, Rev. Tom Shinkle looks at the teachings of Jesus from Matthew 21 and our call to be in mission and ministry in 2022. Are we producing fruit? Are we in action or are we just saying the right things? What will 2022 look like for the Christian Community we call Grand View in three locations?

It's a brand new year filled with brand new opportunities. Alec Amosson looks at what it means to have Christian Hope for a new year, and the simple fact that we are called to share that hope with others.

What if Christmas wasn't just a 'one and done' experience? How are you moving on from Christmas this year, and how have you been changed because of it? Rev. Tom looks at these questions and reminds us all to receive and give grace this Christmas season.

It all leads up to this night - Christmas Eve. This year, as we've been looking at the Perfect Gifts we receive from God and are called to give to others, there is no more perfect gift than Jesus Christ. What if this year we gave gifts that lasted? Rev. Tom has talked about prayer, witness, presence, and this week - week 4 of "The Perfect Gift" he looks at service. How is your life different by serving others and serving God? We are called to serve because he first served us.

In week 3 of "The Perfect Gift" Rev. Tom looks at the perfect gift of presence. How would this year look different if you truly gave your presence to God as we prepare for Emmanuel, God With Us? Would you feel and know God's presence with you differently? And, how could you be more present with the people around you in this season?

In week 2 of "The Perfect Gift" Rev. Tom challenges Grand View to look at their witness. How are you being the hands and feet of Jesus in the world around you - especially to those closest to you? Are you seen as a happy, hopeful Christian or an angry church-person? How does the good news of the gospel influence you to live differently?

Rev. Tom Shinkle kicks off the Advent season at Grand View with week 1 of "The Perfect Gift." Most of us can easily say we have received or attempted to give the perfect gift - but the truth is, these 'perfect gifts' don't always last. What if this year we gave perfect gifts that lasted and were useful in any season?

In week 3 of our series on Jonah, Alec Amosson looks at two stories of people sinking in the midst of the sea and God's provision by saving them. We are one way, and then God provides saving, now we're a new way and we're called to respond with thanksgiving. How are you giving thanks to God for the way he's shown up in your life?

Continuing to look at the book of Jonah, Rev. Tom talks about how Jonah reacted to God when he didn't get his way. Then, make it personal, what happens we don't get our way? How do you act when things don't go as you'd planned or wished? Do you throw a fit, do you have a 'come-apart,' do you withhold attention? Even in the midst of your reaction - there's good news that God still offers Grace and...

On this communion Sunday, Rev. Tom Shinkle looks at the story of Jonah and God's desire and call to be in communion with God's people. But, as the story unfolds, we see that Jonah turns away from God and God's call and heads in his own direction. In this first week of Grand View's series on Jonah, the question is - where is God calling you to go that you may be avoiding or afraid of right now?

Rev. Tom Shinkle looks at this week's Grand View Reads scripture - Matthew 11 and Jesus call to "Come to Me all who are weary and I will give you rest." What kind of rest was Jesus talking about in this passage? And, what promise does that give to us today when we are feeling beat down, tired, and weary from the world around us?

When people see you do they see by your actions that you are a Christian? Rev. Tom follows up Grand View's series on "Narrow Road Rules" by asking that tough question. If Christianity were illegal, would you be arrested and convicted? Or, are you saying one thing and acting another?

In week 6 of "Narrow Road Rules," Rev. Tom talks about the importance of having integrity in your life - especially in your faith life and your witness in the world. And, what does living courteously have to do with following Jesus? Jesus reminded us that we are to produce fruit - patience, peace, love - perhaps all included in courtesy.
